I was only reading a local news article this morning about how hard it is to rent or buy a home in Cornwall at the moment. Just last week a rental property went online and immediately it had 70 applications in an hour! The local estate agents are saying that it’s impossible to keep up with a supply of rental properties. The demand is immense. This has increased due to the number of people working from home who want to live in rural areas or by the sea and can now do so. On the other side of this is the increase of searches for popular home renovations in 2021. With people not being able to move home, they are looking at other ways to make their homes more comfortable and suitable for their changing needs.
Here I’m going to share with you the most popular home renovations that homeowners are considering.

Installing a Garden Room
If you look over on Google Trends, they show a 70% increase in search volume for ‘Garden Shed’ in 2020 compared to 2019. People are searching for ideas on how to change their garden shed space into a garden office to work from home in. Or garden room ideas for that extra living space, which you could make into a family den, gym, or even your own spa.
Garage Conversion
A garage conversion to an office space is more expensive than installing a garden room or shed in the back garden. Nevertheless, it’s been highly searched in Google the past 12 months. You can totally see why as it’s a fantastic way to keep your work and home life separate, so helping achieve that work/life balance.
Home Extensions
A home extension is what we are thinking about. It’s a much better option for us than moving. We live in a perfect village setting opposite the local primary school, we have a village shop, post office and pub so it makes no sense to move. However as a 3 bed detached house we lack that 4th bedroom and could do with more living space downstairs. Again Google Trends are showing a 60% increase in search volume for ‘Home Extensions’ in 2020 compared to 2019. It’s a popular home renovation choice.
Loft Conversions
If a home extension isn’t an option, then how about converting the loft? You can convert an unused space into an extra bedroom or office space. I quite like the idea of a loft home office, it’s a perfect solution to extra space in your home. If this is an idea that is very realistic for your plans I have some great tips here for converting a loft space into an extra bedroom.

Patio and Decking
With spring/summer on the way, and most people this year enjoying holidays at home, there is no better time than to have a garden patio and decking spruced up or installed. I can’t think of anything better than to relax on the patio watching my girls playing, or even working outside. For multilevel decks or even raised decks with railings, do make sure to check if the railings are still attached securely and are showing signs of rust and damage. Most railing systems will last up to 20 years. But if yours have served for far longer than that, it may be time to have them replaced. There’s a ton of railing options that won’t break the bank but will give you years of service. Ask your decking expert to find the best one for your outdoor space.
Have you thought about any home renovations this year?
