Part 1: The big picture (and the relationships everyone Googles!)
If you’ve ever tried explaining A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas to someone who hasn’t read it, you’ll know the struggle.
You start off simple: “It’s fae, it’s romance, it’s a bit Beauty and the Beast…” and then five minutes later you’re knee-deep in mates, political alliances, childhood friends, the most powerful high lord, high ladies, and at least one character who is technically ancient and terrifying but also… kind of iconic!! Yes, I’m meaning you, bone carver!
So today I’m doing what I wish I’d had when I first started reading the series: writing an ACOTAR character relationship chart (in blog post form), including the main ACOTAR couples, confirmed mating bonds, and the big connections that make Prythian feel like one giant, magical family tree!

If you want a full rundown of who’s who first, you can also read my A Court of Thorns and Roses character list here, which gives you all the main characters and a little about them.
Quick spoiler note (because I’m nice like that!!)
This post includes relationship spoilers for the ACOTAR series, especially from A Court of Mist and Fury onwards. I’ll keep it as friendly as possible, but if you’re only partway through the books for the first time and want to go in totally blind, maybe bookmark this for later.
ACOTAR relationship terms (a quick, no-stress guide)
Before we jump into the acotar mates list, A Court of Thorns and Roses couples and ships, here are a few phrases that come up a lot in the fandom:
- Mate/mating bond: A magical bond that can connect two fae. It doesn’t always mean instant romance, but it does mean the connection is intense.
- High Lord / High Lady: The rulers of the courts in Prythian.
- Inner Circle: Rhysand’s closest group members in the Night Court.
- Ships: Fan-favourite pairings.
Right. Tea/coffee topped up? Let’s do this.
ACOTAR character relationships chart (the big picture)
If you want the simplest way to think about it, most of the major relationships in ACOTAR fall into a few categories:
- The Archeron sisters (Feyre, Nesta, and Elain) and their love interests
- The Night Court Inner Circle (Rhys, Mor, Cassian, Azriel, Amren)
- Court politics (alliances, enemies, family ties)
- Ancient beings and “please don’t touch that” bargains
And because we’re all here for the romance as well as the drama… let’s start with the couples.
Keep reading for the map/chart I’ve put together further down this post if you’re more of a visual person!
Main ACOTAR couples and mates (canon relationships)
Feyre Archeron + Rhysand (High Lady & High Lord of the Night Court)
If ACOTAR had a “most powerful couple” award, these two would win it while looking effortlessly gorgeous and pretending they didn’t care.
Feyre starts the series as a human just trying to keep her family alive. Rhysand is introduced as… well, complicated. But their relationship becomes one of the most loved in the series because it’s built on friendship, trust, and actual communication (which, honestly, feels rare in fantasy romance sometimes).
What makes Feyre and Rhysand so satisfying is that it doesn’t feel like a romance that happens to Feyre. It’s a romance she grows into while also growing into herself.
Key relationship notes:
- They’re mates (hello, mating bond)
- They rule the Night Court together as High Lord and High Lady
- Their dynamic is very “equals”, which I personally love
- Their relationship is tied to the Inner Circle, Velaris, and the bigger war politics in Prythian
If you’re a first-time reader, this is the relationship that makes A Court of Mist and Fury such a favourite.
Feyre Archeron + Tamlin (Spring Court)
Ah Tamlin.
This relationship is a big part of the first book, and it’s one of those storylines that hits differently depending on where you are in the series.
At the start, Tamlin is the High Lord who brings Feyre into Prythian, and there’s genuine romance and safety there… until it becomes clear that love without trust and freedom isn’t really love at all.
It’s also one of the most discussed dynamics in the fandom because it’s a reminder that a relationship can start with good intentions and still become unhealthy.
Key relationship notes:
- Feyre and Tamlin are romantically involved in ACOTAR
- Their relationship becomes increasingly strained as the series progresses
- Tamlin’s role shifts from love interest to a much more complicated figure
- Tamlin is also strongly connected to Lucien and the Spring Court’s political position
Nesta Archeron + Cassian (Night Court)
Nesta and Cassian are the definition of tension + healing + two people learning how to be soft without losing their edge.
Cassian is an Illyrian warrior and one of Rhysand’s closest friends. Nesta is… Nesta. Sharp tongue, walls up, trauma underneath it all.
Their relationship is messy, emotional, and (in my opinion) one of the most satisfying arcs because you really see how both of them change.
Key relationship notes:
- They have a deep bond that grows through the series
- Cassian is part of the Night Court’s Inner Circle
- Their story is central in A Court of Silver Flames
- Their romance also ties into Nesta’s evolving relationship with Feyre and Elain
Elain Archeron + Lucien Vanserra (mating bond)
Elain and Lucien are one of the most talked-about pairings because the mating bond exists, but the relationship itself is… complicated.
Lucien has been through a lot (family drama, court drama, identity drama) and Elain’s transformation into fae changes everything for her.
This is one of those relationships that feels like it’s sitting on a knife edge: fate says one thing, feelings say another, and the politics of Prythian make it all even messier.
Key relationship notes:
- Elain and Lucien have a mating bond
- Their relationship is unresolved and tense
- Lucien’s place in Prythian is tied to multiple courts and alliances
- Elain’s quietness often gets underestimated, which makes her connections feel extra intriguing
Amren + Varian (Summer Court)
Amren is an ancient, terrifying, blunt queen trapped in a High Fae body… and Varian is a prince of the Summer Court.
This pairing is weirdly perfect because Varian is one of the few people who can meet Amren’s intensity without flinching.
Key relationship notes:
- Varian is connected to Tarquin and the Summer Court
- Amren is part of Rhysand’s Inner Circle
- Their relationship adds a softer edge to Amren’s character
Kallias + Viviane (Winter Court)
If you want a relationship that feels steady and genuinely loving, Kallias and Viviane are it.
They’re the High Lord and Lady of the Winter Court and they give off strong “we actually like each other” energy!
Key relationship notes:
- Loyal partnership
- Strong political allies
- One of the healthiest dynamics we see in Prythian
The Night Court Inner Circle relationships (friendships, loyalty, and chaos)
The Inner Circle is where a lot of the emotional heart of the series lives. Even when they’re bickering, they’re fiercely loyal.
Rhysand + the Inner Circle
Rhys’s closest group members include:
- Morrigan (Mor): cousin, Third in Command
- Cassian: general commander of the armies
- Azriel: shadowsinger
- Amren: ancient being, terrifying power
The relationships here are built on shared history, trauma, and a lot of “I would burn the world for you” energy.
Mor + Azriel (unrequited love)
This is one of the most emotionally tangled relationships in the series.
Azriel has long-held feelings for Mor, and it creates a quiet ache that sits in the background of the Inner Circle dynamic.
Key relationship notes:
- Azriel’s love for Mor is unrequited
- Mor’s past and personal truth add layers to why this is so complicated
- Their connection also affects how readers interpret Azriel’s other possible pairings
Cassian + Azriel (brotherhood)
Cassian and Azriel are basically brothers. Their friendship is one of my favourite “non-romance” relationships in the series because it’s loyal, funny, and grounded.
They’re also the kind of friends who will insult each other lovingly while also showing up instantly if the other is in danger.
Archeron sisters’ relationship map (family ties)
Feyre + Nesta + Elain
The Archeron sisters are the emotional core of the series in a lot of ways.
Their relationships are messy (because family often is), but the story repeatedly comes back to the idea that even when they don’t understand each other, they’re still connected.
Key relationship notes:
- Feyre is the youngest, and often the one carrying the weight early on
- Nesta and Elain have very different coping styles
- Their bond shifts dramatically once they’re pulled into Prythian
Part 2: Court politics, enemies, ships, and a table-style relationship map
Court connections and political relationships
Because ACOTAR isn’t just romance — it’s also about power, alliances, and survival. And in Prythian, relationships aren’t only about who you love. They’re also about who you trust, who you fear, and who you’re forced to work with when everything is on fire.
Lucien Vanserra + the Autumn Court
Lucien is the estranged son of Beron, High Lord of the Autumn Court, and brother to Eris.
That family dynamic is tense, dangerous, and full of secrets. It also explains why Lucien often feels like he belongs everywhere and nowhere at once.
Key relationship notes:
- Beron is abusive and power-hungry
- Eris is morally grey and constantly keeping everyone guessing
- Lucien’s connections stretch across courts
Tarquin + the Night Court (tested alliance)
Tarquin, High Lord of the Summer Court, is one of the more honourable leaders in Prythian.
I think his relationship with the Night Court is complicated by trust issues and political necessity. It’s one of those “we could be friends if the world wasn’t ending” dynamics.
The King of Hybern + everyone (enemy)
The King of Hybern is the central antagonist for a big chunk of the series, and his actions affect nearly every relationship.
He creates alliances with the Mortal Queens, uses manipulation, and essentially forces characters into situations that shape their bonds (and break them).
Popular ACOTAR ships (fan-favourite pairings)
Even if you’re not deep in fandom spaces, you’ll probably know that ACOTAR readers love to debate ships.
Azriel + Elain
This pairing gets attention because of their quiet moments and the tension around Elain’s mating bond.
Azriel + Gwyn
Gwyn’s friendship with Nesta and her presence in the Night Court has led to a lot of theories about where Azriel’s story will go.
Tamlin + “please let him heal”
Not a ship, but honestly… a lot of readers just want Tamlin to find peace or they just dislike him!

Final thoughts (and tell me your favourite couple)
If you’ve made it this far, you’re either:
- Deeply invested in Prythian politics and romance (same), or
- You are trying to remember who is connected to who without re-reading the whole series (also same!!).
ACOTAR is one of those series where the relationships are half the magic. Not just the romantic ones, but the friendships, the family bonds, the betrayals, and the slow-building trust.
Now I want to know: who’s your favourite ACOTAR couple or ship? Are you a Feyre/Rhys loyalist, a Nessian fan, or are you here for the chaos of the ships? Thank you for reading my in-depth analysis of the roses series! I’ll be back updating when the new books are out!
