3 Tips Your Pet Will Thank You For

It may come as little surprise that pet ownership has been on the rise in lockdown.

With many of us in need of some companionship and having no shortage extra time to dedicate to a new family member, it’s easy to see why new pet owners have finally taken the leap.

And though owning an animal, whether furry, feathered or scaly, is a rewarding experience, it’s one that requires a lot of hard work and commitment.

3 Tips Your Pet Will Thank You For

If you’re considering a new pet in lockdown or are simply looking for tips to take care of your new addition, check out these three tips to keep your household companion happy and healthy.

1. Feed them right

This may sound basic, but it’s something that so many pet owners get woefully wrong.

It happens most often with common pets like cats and dogs, although it does occur with other animals too.

When you’re faced with those big puppy eyes over the dinner table, it’s all too tempting to cave in and offer a tasty morsel. As you know, this makes your dog’s day, but if it happens too frequently, it can also lead to them becoming ill.

Keep an eye on what you’re feeding them, including any little extras, and if you must give them a human treat from time to time, do a little research to be sure it won’t do them any harm.

2. Give them a safe space

It goes without saying that your pet should feel safe and comfortable at all times in your home.

A great way to do this, particularly in the early stages of pet ownership, is to provide them with a small space that’s all their own. Something as simple as a corner of a room with a comfortable bed and a few toys can be enough to give your pet the refuge they need. Giving your pet a safe space is especially important if they’re in need of special care like when they’re pregnant or injured.

This will also help them to adjust to any changes in the future – you’ll be spending lots of time at home with them for the moment, but that won’t always be the case. As restrictions begin to lift, we hope to be spending more time out of the house (possibly in the pub!) and making your home as comfortable as possible will help your pet cope with the initial separation anxiety as their routine changes.

3. Find a vet

Your pet’s health and wellbeing is of the utmost importance to you.

So it’s important to find a vet that shares your priorities.

Veterinary appointments are crucial not just for emergencies and noticeable illness or injury, but routine check-ups too.

Your vet should be up to date with the latest equipment and procedures, and ideally partner with top experts – organisations like Avacta Animal Health who are experts in pet allergy. It’s worth carrying out a little research before choosing your practice to be sure you’ve found the perfect fit for your pet.

Oh, and don’t get caught out with costly bills either – be sure to invest in pet insurance as soon as you can!

We hope these three tips help your new pet settle in at home.
