My Word of the Week 9/05/2015

Time

Another week has been and gone, where does time go? A week ago I was only starting to plan out my posts for the next few weeks as I’m taking up the blogging everyday in May challenge #BEDM. Now we are nine days into May and I have kept up with my challenge so far….. I am sure as you get older that there is some kind of time hole and that as soon as you hit a certain age its speeds up. So as you can gather by now that my word of the week is time.

I am finding that I don’t have enough hours in the day to achieve what I want to do. Time is so short.

A typical Saturday for me is to get up at 4:45am get showered and changed ready for work by 5:30 the latest. Then drive 12 miles to work to be there for 6am. On my break about 9am while I am eating my porridge I check emails, retweet a few competitions and share that days post over a few social media channels. I would be lost without my iPhone! Half an hour is over in no time at all so back to work I go.
Lunch is normally at 12-1pm where I gobble down an apple, yogurt and maybe a cheeky chocolate bar, while I am tweeting away, making blog notes, txting my husband and entering competitions. When I am at work I have to make sure I only need one hand to eat my lunch as the other is busy on the phone draining its battery. Why are iPhone batteries drained in such a short time?
At 1pm I go back to work for 2 more hours until I finish at 3pm, then I pop home and pick up my husband and we go and do our weekly food shop. I make sure he’s with me as I am terrible at overspending on treats, especially the chocolate kind!
We are normally home by 5pm so then its shopping away and time to cook the tea. By 6:30pm we are sitting down eating and waiting for some Saturday night show like, Britain’s Got Talent, The Voice or The X Factor to come on. While I am watching TV I’m catching up with bits and bobs on the laptop. If I get a spare half hour before bed I love to read a few pages of the book that I’m currently reading.
Before I know it I can barely keep my eyes open and it’s time for bed. Time is just a very precious thing and its something that seems to rule our everyday lives.
How often do you say ‘Oh I wish I had time for that!’?
Thanks very much to Thereadingresidence for hosting this great linky once  again.

Short Story Review – Edward’s First Love

I was asked by the lovely Jay Moussa-Mann if I would like to review her short story Edward’s First Love. I thought it would be a good challenge for me to review a short story as I rarely read them and have never written a review on one before.
When I first read Edward’s First Love I thought how moving the story actually is. It’s about one of the founders of the Stockton-Darlington railway, called Edward Pease. Edward was a woollen manufacturer from Darlington who realised that a railway line from Darlington to Stockton was needed for future improvements to the industries. The night the line was due to open in 1825 something happened in Edward’s life, meaning it would never be the same again.

It is a beautifully written Victorian tale that shows huge sadness, and no matter what you are doing at present, or what you have going on in life, your priorities can change immediately.
“They will come tomorrow, presenting it to the world, to the people. There will be excitement and joy and wonder. Is it wrong that I care no longer for this venture?”
There are lovely comparisons between locomotives and how the author describes the situation Edward is in. I don’t want to spoil you with too much of the details of what happens in the story, but before, Edwards first passion was locomotives, and his goal of creating the Stockton-Darlington line was all of a sudden very unimportant.

I believe the authors purpose of writing this short story is to tell us that there are more important things in our everyday lives than materialistic things. This is the message I received from reading through it.
It is a worthwhile read, if you have some spare time. It’s one of those stories that engages you and gets you thinking. I have read it a few times over to fully understand the whole picture.
I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I did.  Edward’s First Love
