1. Listen when others are talking
The desire to always want to talk can be so overwhelming that we forget the place of listening. Whether you’re leading a team or working with others, a vital point of interaction is learning how to listen. It is, however, not enough to listen; you have to listen attentively.
As a leader in a company, it is impossible to take every idea of everyone on the team when concluding. The best you can do is to listen attentively to every idea and sift it through a screen of truth. The mere act of listening to people makes them feel involved with what is going on.
2. Understanding your coworker’s communication style
We all have different styles of communication. Like you have your mode of communication, so do others. Lack of understanding the communication style of others affects comprehension and results in a few feeling offended when others are talking.
To interact effectively with others in the workplace, you have to take out time to understand everyone’s communication style. This can sometimes take a long while, but the benefits have lasting effects.
Several factors can influence how we communicate, especially the choice of words we use. With a better understanding of your coworker’s communication styles, interaction becomes better.
3. Be constructive with your criticism.
Criticism is opinions addressed from a perceived standpoint. Not every criticism is bad or translates to disrespect. Some criticisms can be helpful to the growth of the business. The difference between destructive and constructive criticism is how it is communicated.
Before you criticize the opinion of others, ensure it isn’t coming from a place of envy or bitterness. Instead, make sure it seeks to help the person you’re criticizing get better.
Any criticism that seeks to build up other than pull down is constructive and can improve social interaction and enhance the work environment.
4. Respect the opinions of others
Everyone has a right to hold an opinion and express it in the best possible way. It is not every opinion shared by your coworkers that will sit well with you. You may have a different opinion about the same subject and a right as well to communicate the same.
However, when stating your opinion, you must respect the opinion of others. When you respect the opinions of others, yours will be respected as well and vice versa.
Even when you want to disagree, do so with love and caution. There is no certainty anywhere that your opinion is correct and that of others is wrong.
