Over the past few years, we have tried numerous online butchers. Great packaging is available nowadays meaning the products get delivered safely – look the ice is still frozen! It opens up an area you can try out around the country which you might not have thought possible before. We are down in Cornwall and to have the chance to try a fantastic traditional artisan butcher all the way up in Yorkshire is amazing!

Swaledale online butchers is a specialist butchery team with a whole-carcass, nose-to-tail philosophy for nutrient-dense meat with exceptional flavour. They use native breeds for great-tasting meat. All their beef, pork and lamb is dry-aged on the bone in their Himalayan salt-ageing chamber.
We received a lovely meat selection to try over the weekend. I must say I’m impressed!

What We Received
1.4kg Topside Joint
Topside is a very underrated cut of meat. It is a cheaper option for a delicious roast dinner so much more affordable for all. The topside cut is from the hindquarters and has a small amount of fat to keep the joint moist and juicy while cooking.

Although this cut is used for roasting as a whole joint, it can be diced and slowly cooked in a stew.
We roasted our Swaledale Topside of Beef joint and had it with our roast dinner at the weekend. It was absolutely scrumptious served with lashings of gravy and Yorkshire puddings! It carved easily. The joint was huge for us so we’ve been having roast beef sandwiches this week as well!

10 Pack of Pigs in Blankets
We cooked up the pigs in blankets for breakfast! Mr B forgot to cook them to have with our roast dinner! Nevertheless, it actually turned out better having them in breakfast baps, because we could taste the flavour of them and I must say they are the best pigs in blankets I’ve ever tried!
Made with outdoor-reared heritage-bred pork from the Yorkshire Dales, the simply seasoned sausages were wrapped in the most delicious crispy dry-cured smoked streaky bacon. They were perfect with our own eggs freshly laid that morning!
Dry Cured York-Style Ham Rump
Our dry-cured boneless ham rump joint weighed around 1.6 kg and we wanted to try cooking this in the slow cooker.

Slow Cooker Sweet Sticky Honey Roast Ham
This is the slow cooker recipe we used for a sweet sticky honey roast ham.
Ingredients:
- 1.6 kg dry-cured ham rump joint
- 1 onion peeled and cut into quarters
- 1 tbsp English mustard
- 2 tbsp clear honey
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
Method:
- Place the quartered onion in your slow cooker and place the ham joint on top of the onions
- Pour in 100 ml of water and place the lid on.
- Cook for 6 hours on the low setting. If you cook it for longer it will become more like pulled ham.
- Take the ham joint out and place it on a board for 10 minutes to stand.
- Preheat your oven to 220C/200C fan or gas mark 7
- Lift off the rind with a knife moving slowly across the ham joint. Leave only a thin layer of fat.
- Lightly score the remaining fat on the ham joint in a criss-cross pattern
- Line a roasting dish with foil so it comes up to the side of the roasting dish
- Place the ham joint, fat side up in the roasting dish
- Mix the English mustard, honey and brown sugar together in a cup and then spread it all over the ham joint fat. The foil will catch any excess.
- Bake the ham joint in the oven for 15 minutes or until the ham fat is browned.
- Take out and enjoy warm or cold!

Overall Thoughts
