I’ve lived in Cornwall all my life. Cornwall is home. Before I met Mr B I was a workaholic and never really had the time to explore my homeland. I look back on it now and feel regret. But now we have the girls and I work less in my day job we have the time and of course the passion to show our girls the place they live in. I feel lucky to live in such a picturesque county and I want to go and explore and take in the scenery.

I’m thinking of starting an exploring Cornwall series and sharing my discoveries of the beautiful peninsula (GCSE geography was my strong point!)
Our first stop in exploring Cornwall is Poldhu Cove.
Poldhu Cove
Poldhu means “black pool” in Cornish.
So how did I find Poldhu Cove? Well, it wasn’t by looking at a map, but I found it by searching on Instagram. I actually discovered pictures of the most amazing hot chocolates by the cafe on the beach at Poldhu Cove and hence discovered the cove. The cove is a glorious white sandy beach to the west of the Lizard peninsula on the southwest coast of Cornwall.

The cove is overlooked by the magnificent Poldhu Residential Home – which was formerly a hotel on one side, and Mullion golf course on the other.
Poldhu Cove is a sheltered beach which is fairly remote. It’s popular with the locals due to its soft sand which makes it family friendly. Be warned that unsupervised swimming is not recommended due to the offshore rip currents.

At the back of the beach are reedbeds and sand dunes, and beyond this is the road and the carpark. It’s easily accessible as it’s all on the same level.
The cove faces west, therefore, you can expect wind and waves. Great for surfers. There are surfing lessons available during the Summer season. I suggest at least a jacket outside the Summer months. This one from Lighthouse Clothing is the perfect jacket for those blustery days at the beach. It’s great for rain showers and adventures by the sea.

Facilities
- There is a Café on the beach and the toilets are open seasonally.
The Poldhu Beach Cafe serves a delicious full English breakfast you can eat on the benches on the beach.

- RNLI lifeguard on duty – Summer cover daily from 19 May to 30 September
- Seasonal dog ban – Easter day to 30th September (07:00am – 07:00pm)
