Anyone who has a backyard is in a very fortunate position. You get to have your own piece of paradise that’s private to you, and how you decorate and look after it is completely up to you. This level of design freedom means that you can add whatever you like to your backyard and no one can tell you that you’ve added the wrong thing.
The best part about having creative backyard freedom is that whether you add multiple glasshouses or you choose to add water fountains, the space is really going to show you that you can have a gorgeous backyard without too much effort or investment. You can add a lot of decor and furnishings to your garden that meet your tastes. It’s all in the details, and without those little details your garden won’t be as beautiful as you imagine it could be. So, with this in mind, here are ten things that you need to add to your backyard to make it look great.

- Add an outdoor kitchen. If you love to cook outside, then you’ll love the idea of a full outdoor kitchen. You can choose to install anything from a barbecue to a pizza oven to cook in the backyard. You can even install a refrigerator and cabinetry to make the entire space stand out beautifully. Cooking outside is a pleasure, and you can really enjoy those lazy long summer evenings when you have an authentic pizza cooking in a wood-fired oven outside.
- A new hammock. If you love being in nature, having a hammock outside is the ultimate luxury for your backyard. You can chill out and read, just sway in the sunshine and enjoy the breeze and you can make a romantic date night from having a hammock outside in the yard. You could string it between a couple of trees, or you can have it hanging down from the exterior patio. Either way, an extra large hammock is a comfort piece you really want to have! Some of the extra large ones can hold an excessive amount of eight, and it’s something you can add that will be an extra seating area for your friends, too!
- A brand new projector screen. Have you ever heard of outdoor cinema? You can have your very own outdoor movie night with the right projector screen! Don’t pile onto the couch to watch a movie in the lounge when you can be outside and enjoying a movie in the open air. All you need with it is a few blankets, giant pillows and snacks to make it a movie night worth enjoying.
- A reading corner. We talked about that extra large hammock, but what about a reading nook? You can turn your backyard into a paradise when you pack an area with plenty of pillows, comfy reading chairs, a small shelf for books and a small cool box or refrigerator that is full of your favourite drinks and snacks. A reading nook also needs some lighting, but be sure to choose some outdoor scents that will stave off the bugs and mosquitoes – you don’t want to be bitten alive while you’re reading a book!
- A fire pit. Talking about being outside with friends, why not sit around a fire pit telling stories and roasting marshmallows? A fire pit adds ambience to your outside space, and you can draw warmth from the flames while you enjoy the evening. The fire pit can be made of any material you like, and you will find that you can make it match the rest of the aesthetic of the house and garden, too.
- A trampoline. If you have kids in the house, an outdoor, in-ground trampoline is going to be one of the most fun activities that they can have in the backyard. It makes it so much easier to hop onto and there are lowered injury risks, too. Your kids won’t be falling several feet from the trampoline to the ground, which will make all the difference if you want to improve outdoor safety.
- A shower. Yes, you can add a shower to the backyard! It’s a luxury for most but if your outdoor space is a private one, you could think about adding a waterfall-head shower with surrounding tropical plants. This will give your backyard that oasis feel, and that’s going to add something exotic to a space that generally wouldn’t be an exotic place to be! You deserve the perfect privacy in your garden, so make sure that you do your research so you won’t be seen by the neighbours.
- A swingset. Even if you don’t have children, who says you can’t have a swingset set up outside? There are plenty of options to add adult swings outside and you can make sure that it’s reinforced to a heavier weight if you want to add more than one adult at the same time. There are so many fun things that are lost as we get older – who says you can’t enjoy them in your own home?
- A stream. Is there anything more beautiful than the sound of running water? If fountains aren’t your thing, a man made stream could be! You could add a steam that works with its own water supply constantly recycled. When the stream is finished, you could lay in your new hammock and listen as it babbles by. It’s also the perfect addition for the birds to enjoy!
- A hanging chair. You might have seen these on the front of the home magazines, but a hanging cocoon chair is designed for all. It’s a comfortable place for you to relax outside, and you can use it for reading, take it with you camping or just to relax in and enjoy your garden space.

You deserve an outdoor space that is full of luxurious items that make your garden look good. Now you have the tips to help, you can get started and make your garden stand out.
