My 5 year old is doing so well in reception class. With just about half a term left of school before the Summer holidays, she’s been working on some of the year 1 maths content. One of these topics is times tables. So I was really pleased when a review offer of *Rhyme Times by Joan Rotheram and illustrated by Amy Pickles popped into my inbox. Book Description
This book includes the times tables that children need to learn for National Curriculum Years 1 to 3.
Children of all ability levels can learn their times tables through the fun themes and lively pictures in this book and the enjoyment of hearing these rhymes and reciting them aloud.
Children respond from a very young age to rhythm, rhyme and frequent repetition. The text is simple, similar to nursery rhymes. The rhymes will be read and reread for enjoyment with adults or by the child alone.
Amy Pickles’ delightful illustrations will captivate the young readers and reinforce the learning of the times tables through visual memory.
This book is written for school age children from Reception to Year 3 but will also be enjoyed by younger children in nursery classes sharing with adults.
What We Thought
It’s a great book! Very visual and rhyming phrases are very important for young children when they learn a new concept like their times tables. Rhyme Times is full of fun rhymes and perfect for adults to read along with children. I thoroughly enjoy it! It’s become a bedtime favourite!
I love the simple way Rhyme Times explains multiplication using everyday objects, and the illustrations are fantastic. You can see a lot of thought and care has gone into this book and I’m happy to share it with you. It’s brilliant!
It’s the first of a volume with the simplest times tables to learn. 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x and 10x. I will definitely be getting future volumes for the others.

Love the idea of this book. My son is just starting to learn his times tables at school and this would be incredibly useful. The rhyming aspect is genius because we all know how easily a simple rhyme can get stuck on your head!
