As Autumn leaves us, Winter is coming (sorry I had to put that I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan!) and it’s time to get your home cosy for Winter. Winter is such a fabulous time of the year. You have crisp cold mornings and dark cosy evenings. Perfect for snuggling up by the fire with a good book and a hot chocolate.
Of course Winter also means Christmas. For us this is family time, when my older sister comes over from Canada and we have huge get togethers. Eating lots of food, playing silly games and having a laugh. That’s what it’s all about.
I have come up with 5 ways to make your home cosy this Winter, and to help you get ahead before the Christmas plans come into place.
Make Your Home Cosy This Winter
- Create a cosy Sofa and Bed
Winter can mean bad weather – cold, wet, windy, and frosty. So you may be spending a lot of time on your sofa curled up reading a book or watching TV with a hot chocolate. You want to make this area as comfortable and snug as possible. This is possible with lots of cushions and throws like the ones from Julian Charles.
The good thing about these type of soft furnishings is that they make the room inviting and instantly warmer. If you have leather sofas, throws can take away that chilly feel when you sit on it. They are also good for adding an extra layer to your bed. Wool and faux fur are the best ones to keep the cold out.
One day I would love to go on a Winter retreat to a log cabin or a chalet in the Swiss Alps. They always seem to have a cosy warm feeling about them. Sitting by a log fire with throws and warm drinks, chatting away is my ideal holiday. So this is the kind of look I’m looking for when I’m making my home cosy this Winter.
- Cooking Warm Wholesome Comfort Food
In Winter I love to cook dishes like, stews, pies and roasts. It’s not the time of year for a salad – how will that keep you warm on a cold frosty day? Putting the slow cooker on in the mornings means a lovely meal for tea. Plus there is always seconds going if you wish!
- Keep the draughts out
I love using draught excluders for the bottoms of the doors to keep the heat in and cold air out. You can get lots of funky designs so will help to decorate your room as well. They can help with lowering your energy bills in Winter.
Having a thick soft rug will keep your feet warm and give the room a cosy feeling. They can also stop draughts from under the door.
- Soft Lighting
With the darker evenings you will need your lights on earlier. I love to use LED’s and soft string fairy lights to create a cosy warm atmosphere.
- Greenery Displays
As you know I love gardening and flowers. This doesn’t stop me from using the odd fake flower here and there. I think at Winter decorating your room with fake wreaths, greenery, flowers and berries bring the perfect touch. On the other hand, you can collect pine cones, dry leaves and branches and make your own centerpieces. Plus they will give off that wonderful Winter smell in your home.
If I could live where I live in a chalet with a log fire I would be in heaven. Winter is the best time of year for relaxing and snuggling up and I hope these ideas will help you achieve that feel.

What would be your ideal Winter retreat?
As always I love to read your thoughts.
