Aren’t you excited for the sunny summer days where we can spend most of our days outside? I know I am! After months of spending our days indoors, the thought of finally being able to spend time in our gardens enjoying the nice weather and a refreshing glass of pink gin is something I’m definitely looking forward to.
Whether you have a small urban balcony or a large garden in the countryside (lucky you!), it’s time to invest in our outdoor spaces and give them some much-needed attention. Today, I’ve partnered up with award winning retractable roof specialists Designer Shades, who create retractable awnings, pergolas with retractable roofs and other outdoor shading systems to go through some of the top outdoor trends that will swoop outdoor spaces this year.

Bringing the indoors outside
With everything that happened in this past year (and counting), we’ve all realised how important our outdoor spaces are and how essential it is to spend time outside. It gives us a chance to connect with nature, reduces stress and boosts our mood – being outside is great! However, how will we spend more time outdoors when the British weather is so temperamental?
Designer Shade Solutions’ retractable roofs are the answer. These are modern pergolas that feature retractable and tilting roofs allowing you to be outdoors no matter the weather. If the weather is nice, the retractable roof can be completely open, for some shade it can be tilted and, if it starts to rain, the roof can be easily closed.
As Lamb and Bear explains in this blog post, these modern pergolas “can be added to the middle of your garden, patio or terrace as a stunning centrepiece retreat, creating the perfect outdoor/indoor area.” Plus, if you are looking to extend your living space, install one of these attached to your property, combine it with some vertical glass systems, lighting and heating and you will experience the comfort of an indoor space while enjoying the panoramic outdoor views. Doesn’t it sound incredible?
Quiet gardens
According to Apartment Therapy, quiet gardens will be one of the trends that will rule gardens this year. “A garden full of flowers in soothing colours — plus, the gentle sound of swaying ornamental grasses — is the way to go if you’re looking to turn whatever backyard you have into a little slice of serenity.”
My garden space has become my little piece of heaven during these difficult times, where I went for peace and quiet, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who did this. I can truly see people giving a lot more attention to their gardens this year, transforming them into the most relaxing space of the house with soothing colours, relaxing scents and comforting sounds.

Let your outdoors shine
Ready to go indoors after enjoying the beautiful sunset? Not so fast. Outdoor living doesn’t have to stop when the sun goes down. Add outdoor lighting to create ambience and ensure that you can continue enjoying our outdoor space all night long. Me Him the Dog and the Baby mentions that there are various ways to add lighting to your garden, “You can light up your garden path, your porch or your patio. Add some outdoor fairy lights or some spotlights to highlight your favourite parts of the garden.”
