The application and interview process for a job is a great opportunity to dispel falsehoods and disprove skeptics. By educating and instilling the following in people with impairments, you may aid them:

Put your best foot forward.

Choosing a career that aligns with one’s skills, experience, and passions is the first step in achieving professional success. A person with a handicap should avoid responding adversely to an interviewer’s question by asking, “Is that a lawful thing to ask?” The more persistent they are, the more likely it is that they’re working in an atmosphere that isn’t inclusive.

Filling in the blanks in one’s employment history.

Telling a prospective employer that one had to quit working due to major health problems is perfectly acceptable. To the extent that it led to their applying for Social Security Disability Insurance payments, this is particularly true.

Employers should be able to see this as a legitimate circumstance. Shortly after giving a succinct explanation, employers should go through their job history and the experience they had previous to going on leave of absence. Those with disabilities that I’ve worked with on SSDI have a distinct advantage over other applicants because of their age and wealth of job experience and industry expertise.

The ability to work productively by being aware of one’s workstation’s limitations.

If you live with a disability, don’t shy away from letting future employers know about the tools and accommodations that make your job more efficient and effective. 

A “standing desk” is what employers are looking for. Are there options for working hours that are more flexible? Is it possible to work from home? The sooner a person with a handicap informs a prospective employer about any modifications they need, the better.

Using the experience to improve oneself.

Whether or not a person has a handicap, they will still encounter employment applications that go unanswered and interviews that go awry. And that’s OK, too!

Individuals with impairments must not succumb to discouragement in these circumstances.
