If you grew up with The Cat in the Hat, you’ll know exactly the kind of trouble he brings. A rainy day, a bored house and a very mischievous cat who turns up uninvited. Now that chaos has made its way onto the Nintendo Switch, and it’s a lot of fun.

The Cat in the Hat: Rainy Day Mayhem launched on 30th October from Outright Games, in partnership with Dr. Seuss Enterprises. It’s a brand-new party game for the whole family, and it’s available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Our thoughts in a nutshell? Great fun, full of tricks, very nostalgic, and a game that really is for everyone!

We played it over the weekend as a family. L was excited to see what the game was all about. She knows a lot about Dr Seuss, as I used to read Dr Seuss’s ABC and Fox in Socks to her when she was little – giving back lockdown vibes!!

A rainy day, a naughty cat and a house full of mayhem

The setup is pure Cat in the Hat. It’s a rainy day, and you join the Cat in the Hat and friends for a day of unpredictable antics in a house that has been turned into one big playground of mayhem.

You can play as some of the much-loved characters from the book:

  • Sally
  • Johnny
  • Thing 1 and Thing 2
  • Little Cat A

They team up with the cheeky Cat in the Hat and the ever-cautious Fish (who, let’s be honest, is the only sensible one in the whole house!). It all feels very true to the original story, and that nostalgic charm is what makes it so lovely for parents as well as kids.

Find the Cat, minigames and sticker collecting

Every game starts with a fast-paced round of hide-and-seek called Find the Cat. You race around looking for him, and you earn points against your family and friends as you go.

From there, the game opens up with up to 18 minigames to unlock and enjoy. As you play, you’ll also be working on completing your sticker collection, which gives little players a reason to keep coming back for just one more go.

It’s quick, silly and competitive in the best way, which is exactly what you want from a party game.

Easy to pick up for all ages

This is where the game really shines for families. It has:

  • Simple controls so younger children can jump straight in
  • Adjustable difficulty levels so it doesn’t get frustrating
  • Flexible challenges that work for different ages and abilities

That means siblings, parents and even grandparents can all sit down together and play without anyone feeling left behind. There’s no steep learning curve or long tutorial to get through first.

Solo or up to four players

You can play on your own, but this is a game that is best with other people. Rainy Day Mayhem supports up to four players in local multiplayer, so it’s perfect for family game nights, wet weekends and those afternoons when everyone needs something to do together.

It’s really fun in multiplayer – L won, Mr B got very competitive and we all couldn’t stop laughing!

Don’t miss the narrated story

One of my favourite extras is the fully narrated version of the original Cat in the Hat book, which is included in the game.

After all the mayhem, you can settle down and bring the classic story to life. It’s a really sweet touch, and a lovely way to bring books and gaming together. The Cat in the Hat was first published in 1957 and has delighted generations, so it feels special to be able to share it with the next one in a new way.

Who is it best for?

I’d say Rainy Day Mayhem is ideal for:

  • families who want a game they can all play together
  • children who love Dr. Seuss books and characters
  • parents who grew up with the Cat in the Hat and love a bit of nostalgia
  • anyone looking for a light, funny party game without any stress

Older kids might want more of a challenge, since the minigames can get repetitive after a while.

Final thoughts: a fun, nostalgic game for the whole family

Overall, The Cat in the Hat: Rainy Day Mayhem is a cheerful, chaotic and charming family game. It’s easy to pick up, packed with minigames, and has just the right amount of Dr. Seuss magic. With simple controls, adjustable difficulty and up to four players, it works whether you’re playing with little ones, older siblings or the grown-ups too.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly game to bring some fun to a rainy day (or any day!), this one is well worth a look.
