I’ve been looking forward to sharing my review of *The Thief On The Winged Horse by Kate Mascarenhas for ages! Today it’s finally my turn on the blog tour arranged by MidasPR and Head of Zeus publishers. As usual with my book reviews, I will share the description of what the book is about before my thoughts and then today’s review has a giveaway!
The Kendrick family have been making world-famous dolls since the early 1800s. But their dolls aren’t coveted for the craftmanship alone. Each one has a specific emotion laid on it by its creator. A magic that can make you feel bucolic bliss or consuming paranoia at a single touch. Though founded by sisters, now only men may know the secrets of the workshop.
Persephone Kendrick longs to break tradition and learn the family craft, and when a handsome stranger arrives claiming doll-making talent and a blood tie to the Kendricks, she sees a chance to grasp all she desires.
But then, one night, the family’s most valuable doll is stolen. Only someone with knowledge of magic could have taken her. Only a Kendrick could have committed this crime…
What I Thought
Oh The Thief on the Winged Horse is a great book to get into. It has a bit of everything – romance, fantasy, crime and magic all thrown in! But was it the book I thought it would be?
Yes and no. They book description is fantastic, as well as the cover design. It has the sense of family mystery about it. But, yes there is a but. It lacked oomph for me. I wanted it to give me a bit more but it didn’t quite get there. However it is a charming read with a great plot. The characters needed a bit more development, but the basis was there.
The Kendricks have been doll maker’s since the 1800s. Their dolls are special. Magical dolls that are enchanted with a feeling that the owner can bring out upon touching the doll. When the most prized and valuable doll is stolen, only a family member could know how to do it. An inside job so to speak. With family secrets and motives, any number of people could have taken the doll. You will be intrigued to find out who dunnit!
The star of the book – if you want to call it, is 19 year old Persephone Kendrick. She desperately wants to become a doll maker, but that is strictly for the male sorcerers. Persephone leads this challenge to change this and fight for women’s rights.
Although it’s not a 5 star book The Thief on the Winged Horse truly deserves 4 stars.
