*AD-Gifted: We were gifted a copy of Jungle Animals in exchange for this post.
As L is getting older, and learning to read more words, she’s finding many different books fascinating during our storytime sessions. We are slowly getting away from reading the same book twice in a row every night! Our latest read is Jungle Animals by Mels Mackey.
Jungle Animals is a children’s book with creative artistic illustrations and fun rhyming text describing animals living in the jungle. The aim of the book is about educating children to appreciate the uniqueness of animals in a fun rhyming way, while enhancing their vocabulary and reading skills. It teaches children the importance of the Earth’s ecosystems and how each animal’s characteristics are naturally adapted to interact with their habitat. Bright colours and entertaining pictures are designed to attract children and draw them into learning about the world of animals.
Environmental impact and global warming have increased the necessity to educate children about the environment. Many animals mentioned in this book are severely threatened by habitat destruction. Teaching environmental responsibility creates a better world benefiting people and animals.
What We Thought
Jungle Animals is a perfect children’s story for educating them on the environment. It’s told in a fun rhyming way for kids, which will help them to remember, read and vocab skills. The author goes into quite a bit of detail for each animal and their environment.
The hand-drawn illustrations will relate to children and help them apply the words to the animal. The facts on each animal is a brilliant addition throughout the book. My only critique would be that some words and phrases can be hard to read with the text over the background illustrations.
Many of the animals mentioned in the book are severely threatened by habitat destruction. With children learning about the nature of these animals and their surroundings, it will hopefully make them aware of how important conservation is and environmental responsibility.
Overall we found it an interesting book to read together, I was learning myself along the way. I honestly didn’t know lions sleep for up to 22 hours each day! It’s a book we are happy to add to our library as a resource book to read over and over again.
