Modern pergolas vs traditional pergolas: what’s the difference?

I’ve always loved the look of pergolas – stunning wooden structures that define an inviting outdoor space and add style and personality to any garden. However, traditional pergolas are not as practical as I’d like them to be and honestly, if I’m going to add something to my garden, I wouldn’t want to choose style over functionality. Yes, I want something that looks great but I also want to be able to make the most out of it, no matter rain or shine.

On my journey to find an alternative to traditional pergolas I came across modern pergolas. Modern pergolas perfectly balance style and function, so you don’t have to choose one over the other. It sounds great but what’s the true difference between these two garden structures? What are the benefits of pergolas? These were all questions that started to pop into my head. So, I’ve decided to partner up with Designer Shade Solutions retractable pergola manufacturer to share their pergola expertise with us!

What are traditional pergolas?

As this article on Let’s Fix It explains, “Traditional pergolas are large outdoor structures that often feature a flat lattice roof, embellishing gardens, patios and other outdoor areas.” Traditional pergolas are used outdoors to offer shade and highlight specific areas of gardens, terraces, patios and balconies, such as dining spaces and entertainment zones. The main downside of traditional pergolas is their lack of protection against the rain, which simply does not make them a fit solution for gardens across the country.

What are the benefits of pergolas?

As Diarmiud Gavin comments in this article on the Independent, “Pergolas are a useful multi-purpose garden feature.” Pergolas can “host for a ton of plants such as climbing roses, honeysuckle, wisteria and clematis which need something to clamber over. They can create a place of shade for a sunny day. And when combined with appropriate planting they create the perfect private spot in an otherwise overlooked garden.”

Pergolas can also create a seamless transition from indoor living and outdoor living, allow you to extend your current living space. This happens when pergolas are installed attached to your property. Pergolas can also be added to other parts of your outdoor space. As Houzz mentions, “You can add a pergola as part of a larger deck or patio project, as a freestanding structure or attached to one side of your home or another structure.”

By adding a modern pergola to your outdoor you can also extend the amount of time spent outdoors. As Time with Thea comments, “These retractable roofs will provide you with the perfect space to enjoy your outdoors, increasing the amount of time spent outdoors.”
