A Confident Reader – Books For Reading With a 5 Year Old | AD-gifted

L is a fantastic and confident reader. She was reading before she started school last year. Her love of books comes from me. We both read every day. Her teachers have put her on the advanced reading scheme to continue to stretch her and she’s doing so well, we are very proud. But finding enough books for her to read is a task! So I was extremely happy to hear from Books2Door (who we have worked with previously) who wanted us to try out some of their reading boxsets. These are the two box sets we are trying out:

My First Read-along Library

This Reading Ladder Collection consists of 30 fun books designed to help your child become an avid reader. L really loves these books and can confidently read through the levels of 1-2 of this 3 level set. But what we are learning is reading comprehension with her, so understanding what she’s reading. This reading collection was designed by literacy experts and professionals like Nikki Gamble to make this learning process effective. This particular set is fantastic for ages 5-7.

Levels and Books Included

Level 1

Flora the Fairys Magic Spells, Flora the Fairy, Flat Stanley on Ice, Flat Stanley Plays Ball, Jungle School, Mr. Men The Big Bump, Shout, Show and Tell!, Thomas & Friends Fun and Bumps, Three Waggy Tales, Under the Sea

Lovely stories in this level are ideal for first readers. They are great for you to ask questions and get their opinions on what they think the books are about based on illustrations and titles. The books are perfect for helping with phonics and encouraging them to sound out the words.

Level 2

Alfies Great Escape, Big Red Balloon, Dilly and the Birthday Treat, Follow the Swallow, Frogs Do Not Like Dragons, Mairis Mermaid, Monster Eyeballs,  Norman the Naughty Knight, One Windy Day, Sinclair Wonder Bear

As you move onto level 2 the sentences and words are slightly trickier and ideal for readers who are gaining in confidence. Level 2 covers bands Orange, Turquoise, Purple, these books will have a wide array of sentence structures, and a range of vocabulary that might not be found in Level 1. The books at this level contain really interesting stories with up to eight lines of text on each page.

Level 3

Level 3 books are designed for a completely confident reader that can understand a variety of themes and stories. These books have chapters and sentence structures that differ from page to page. You will see an increase in trickier words and sentences.

Secret Kingdom My Magical Adventure Collection

The next set of books we received are the Secret Kingdom My Magical Adventures 26 book box set. It’s a magical series, ideal for readers ages around 6-8 years who is a confident reader who loves fairies, magic and loves a story about wonderful friendships. The Secret Kingdom books are a great starter for independent reading.

The Secret Kingdom was created by Rosie Banks, who grew up in a small village. As she was growing up she fantasised about magical fairies and creatures in mysterious lands and it became her point of reference as she got older and began her author career.

The books are a wonderfully put-together series with beautiful illustrations that are pretty to look at and really enhance the story and the magical world. The wicked Queen Malice is causing chaos and it is up to Ellie, Summer and Jasmine, and Trixi the pixie to help save the kingdom. This big series is great for those that love the power of friendship and sisterhood, through the power of their bond, courage, bravery, and daring choices, they are able to stop the army of hungry caterpillars and the terrifying storm of sprites!
