Halloween: How To Ensure Your Kids’ Safety During The Spooky Season

Halloween is a magical time for kids. The fun of dressing up, getting together with friends, and, of course, plenty of free sweets and chocolate can make for the perfect evening for a child – and plenty of adults too! It is important to prepare appropriately for the different challenges that Halloween can present and ensure that your kids enjoy the night safely.

Happy Halloween! Three cute little laughing girls in witches’ costumes are coming to the house for sweets.

Read The Labels On Any Costumes

Costumes are more reliable these days, but it is still worth checking the labels to ensure you choose a costume with minimal flammability. It’s also a good idea to ensure that you keep your kids away from any open flames while wearing their costumes. Even non-flammable materials aren’t a total failsafe when coming into direct contact with an open flame like a candle.

Stay Visible

Since trick or treating is mainly done after dark, being visible to cars and other road users is crucial. You could consider investing in some glowsticks, torches or spooky-themed lanterns for your kids to carry to ensure that they remain visible and safe while outdoors. You could also consider sewing or sticking reflective strips to the edges of skirts, cloaks or shoes to help them be seen.

Take Them For A Dental Check-Up

The sweets, chocolate, and other goodies kids get from Halloween trick or treating are a big part of the fun. However, it can also have a bad impact on your kids’ teeth. Having a dental check-up before 31st October rolls around can help you understand how much you should indulge your kids over the holiday. A dentist will be able to advise you on the best course of action to take. Stay In A Group

If your kids are a bit older, they may want to have the chance to go and play with their friends while trick or treating. If you’re wary of letting them wander the neighbourhood at night without supervision, then it could be a good idea to get everyone together as a group: you, your kids, their friends, and their friends’ parents. This has the added bonus of giving you other adults to enjoy the night with extra eyes to watch out for the kids.

Thoroughly Remove Face Paint

It’s best not to allow kids to sleep in their face paint, both in terms of keeping the house clean and for their health. While most face paints are safe for children’s use, prolonged exposure to them could cause eye or skin irritation. It’s best to remove face paint with gentle, child-safe soap or shampoo and warm water.

Limit The Sweet Intake

You should explain to your kids before Halloween that they will not be able to eat all of their sweets at once. This may be a more challenging conversation for younger children, but you should ensure they understand why eating too many sweets in one go is bad for them, their health, and their teeth. Assure them that their sweets will be there waiting for them; they will just have to enjoy them in moderation.
