Automatic valves control large amounts of liquid in industrial and farm water systems. Some of them are incredibly tough, but you need to maintain your systems regularly to avoid unexpected breakdowns. When valves go wrong, you can have expensive tank spills and a dry system. Here is a step-by-step guide to ensure everything works perfectly.

Step-by-Step Guide To Maintaining Heavy-Duty Float Valves

Step 1: Shut Off Main Water Pressure Safely 

Before you start working on your water system, you must turn off the main supply line completely. Working on a valve that is under pressure can cause sudden leaks and painful injuries. Locate the primary isolation valve and turn it off. 

After the supply is off, open a nearby tap or drain to bleed off any trapped line pressure. It is much safer to work on a dry, calm system. This quick safety step protects your tools and keeps you in complete control.

Step 2: Clean the Floating Ball and Main Lever Arm

Over time, floating components will build up heavy layers of green algae, mud, or mineral scale. This extra weight will keep the ball from rising properly and thus prevent the float valve from closing. Wipe the entire float ball with a clean cloth and warm soapy water.

Check the long metal arm for any signs of bending, deep rust or physical damage. If the arm is bent, then it will adjust the water level, and the float valve will not close properly. Fix the broken arm by straightening it out carefully or inserting a replacement part that fits.

Step 3: Check The Internal Rubber Washers and Seals

The internal rubber seals within the valve body take constant pressure and wear as time goes by. Minerals in hard water can scratch the rubber, making small paths for water to leak through. 

When it is open, check the seals inside the main valve housing for any cracking, tearing, or flattening. If the washer is worn out, replace it with a new, good-quality replacement. Keeping these seals soft and clean will ensure a leak-free shut-off every time. 

Step 4: Clear Out Trapped Debris and Dirt Blockages 

Small pieces of sand, rust or pipe scale can easily become trapped in the valve nozzle. This debris causes clogs in the plunger and restricts water flow.

Using a soft wire or a brush, the inside channels will be cleaned out completely. Then flush the valve body with a burst of clean water to get rid of all the remaining dirt. In this way, for a quick cleaning step, blockages can be averted during peak usage times.

Step 5: Lubricate All Moving Pivot Points

The metal pivot joints on a heavy-duty unit move each time water levels change. These joints can become stiff and catch in the open position without lubrication. Use a few drops of food-grade silicone lubricant directly onto the pivot pins.

Then move the lever arm up and down by hand, so the oil spreads through the joint. Do not use heavy grease, as it attracts dirt and clogs the mechanism over time. If the water level changes slightly, the unit responds right away thanks to the smooth pivots.

Step 6: Reassemble the Unit And Test the Action

All the internal washers need to be in their channels and not pinched, so everything should be in place. Turn the main water supply valve back on. Check to see if the tank fills up closely, and check the body for small leaks or drips.

Push the floating ball down by hand to see that the water fills the tank quickly. The ball will rise naturally to completely stop the flow of water, and you can reach your desired height.
