A few weeks back, I remember watching Stacey Solomon’s Instagram stories and saw her making a gorgeous mirror for her living room wall with rope! It was genius! She already had the mirror and with her glue gun glued the rope around the mirror. It ended up looking fantastic. It got me thinking about what can I make with rope around the home?
I love all things nautical and the beach life, living in Cornwall by the sea does that to you! I have the start of a beach themed bathroom in my downstairs cloakroom where I’ve collected special looking pebbles, shells, and sea glass. I’ve even got a couple of pieces of rope we’ve found on the beach from old fisherman’s nets, and I would love to do something with them.
So I’ve had a browse around online and discovered you can make virtually anything with rope, or at least jazz anything up with a bit of rope! It’s easy to use rope outside the house for projects like making a kid’s swing, rigging, making a rope ladder, tying down your tent, or like my mum using it for her washing line. But it’s more unusual to use rope inside the home. Here are a few ideas.
Framing Pictures
Like Stacey did with her mirror, you can use rope to frame pictures. Make sure you use glue to stick it into place. You can also use it to hang pictures if the rope frame is a little too much rope.
Shelving
Suspend your shelves with rope. I was thinking of this for my beach themed bathroom. They don’t have to be overly huge.
Rope Baskets and Vases
I love these ideas. If you have a plain glass vase you want to decorate, coil rope around it working your way up. Make sure the rope is coated in glue so it sticks to the vase. If you are wanting to store silk/artificial flowers you could use the rope by itself to make a vase shape without a container.
Storage is huge at the moment. You can use rope, in a similar way to how you make a vase, to decorate a container to make a rope basket. Alternatively, glue rope around a cardboard box for a cheaper version. Find a spare piece of fabric to line the box and glue the edge under the rope all around the top to make it prettier.
Hanging Plants
I’ve found some really lovely interior decor accounts on Instagram, where they are showcasing hanging plant pots. The pots are held in like rope baskets, it’s a great idea that looks stunning.
Rope Coasters
Coil rope to your heart’s content and make nautical themed coasters. These are a pretty simple place to start on your rope around the home decor journey.
