Wisdom teeth can be a real pain. Sometimes the pain is caused by the teeth erupting from the gums and moving into place. Sometimes wisdom teeth get impacted and this is due to the pressure the tooth is putting on the surrounding bone and tissues. Even if your wisdom teeth are coming in perfectly it can hurt or cause a tight jaw. Luckily there are a number of home remedies to help lessen your wisdom tooth pain.

Clove – A natural anesthetic, clove can help numb nerve pain. The best way to use clove to relieve your toothache is to get clove oil and put a couple drops on a cotton ball, then place the cotton ball on the wisdom tooth area. You will want to avoid getting the clove oil on your tongue or gums because it can sting.

Cayenne and Ginger Paste – Just like with clove oil this remedy can cause irritation to your gums and the soft tissues in your mouth, so you need use caution when applying this remedy. Using a mortar and pestle to grind your cayenne and ginger until it forms a paste. Soak a cotton ball with the paste and apply that to the wisdom  tooth. In a pinch if you don’t have both ingredients use the one you have because they both have some pain inhibiting properties.

Peppermint Tea – Soak a peppermint tea bag with warm water then put it on the wisdom tooth area that is causing the pain. Peppermint is a natural astringent and also can help reduce swelling which will often help reduce pain.

Salt Water – Mix one teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water until the salt is dissolved and then swish the mixture in your mouth. This can be especially effective if your toothache is more about sore gums or the other soft tissues in your mouth.

Myrrh – A lot of spices have properties that make them great for dealing with tooth pain and myrrh is both a natural anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial. To use myrrh simmer one teaspoon of the spice in two cups water to make a tincture and refrigerate. Mix 1 teaspoon of the tincture with ½ cup warm water and rinse your mouth 5 to 6 times a day.

Vanilla Extract – Make sure you have real vanilla and apply it to bit of cotton or use a cotton swab to apply the vanilla to the area. Vanilla has incredible antioxidant properties and contains alcohol so if you have a wisdom tooth that is erupting vanilla can help you heal more quickly.
