Think about your budget
When it comes to any project at home or in the garden, it is important to work out what your budget is. When you know how much money you have to work with, then it will help to put a number of your plans in place. For example, if you are on quite a tight budget, then it is a good idea to think about doing the work yourself. You will need to source materials, but there will be no labour costs hiring someone else to do it all for you. If you’re short on time but have a bigger budget, then it could allow you to hire someone to sort the garden for you, and it could influence the kind of materials that you use.
Check if planning permission is required
Planning is something that can vary quite widely. For garden landscaping, then it could be required, especially if you plan to build any walls that will be over one-metre high (if by a road), or over 2-meters high (if built anywhere else). If you live in a conservation area or in a listed building, then this will definitely need to be applied for. Any decking that you build, or building of an out-building, will need to be less than 50% of the size of your house, to not need planning permission. So the best thing is to check with your local council before starting anything. If you hire someone to do the work for you, then this will usually be something that they will do for you.
Sketch the layout
Measuring up the garden and then applying pencil to paper, before digging anything up, is the next step to take. Plan it all out in detail first, and then you will know exactly what will be going where, whether you are doing the work or someone else is.
