We all love to start a new year. It’s that brand new feeling of a fresh start and welcoming the year ahead, and what better way to celebrate is with a party. This means a new dress is required! Now, not to be a downer but if celebrating at a party isn’t possible with certain restrictions and whatnot, you can still dress up and party in your own home with your loved ones. Either way, a new dress or a new outfit is certainly required. So how do you dress for New Year’s Eve? Well, here I’m going to brainstorm some ideas so you can celebrate in style!

Formal New Year’s Style
Oh, wouldn’t it be something to be invited to a formal New Year’s party? Tuxedos and long evening ballgowns are key to this kind of event. Don’t forget the clutch, long evening gloves, and heels! For jewellery, I would go with simplistic designs like a pair of teardrop earrings and a simple pendant. Let the dress be the talk of the party!
Not So Formal
If it’s a regular party and you are looking for special clothes to wear, I have some great suggestions for you: a sequin blouse with tailored trousers, faux leather trousers and a chunky knit. In fact, anything with sequins on works well with statement earrings! As we are in the depths of winter, I would suggest some kind of coat to keep you warm.

Easy Costume Ideas
Customise an easy outfit with accessories. If full-on fancy dress mode isn’t your thing, but it’s a costume party you are going to, here are a few ideas that are appropriate for a New Year’s party. Have a look around the women’s clothing section for sequinned dresses or tops and leather skirts. These items are great places to start for your easy costume. Next layer up your items with things like feather boas, elbow-length gloves, temporary tattoos, party hats, beads, you get the idea! Last-minute easy costume sorted!
Fancy Dress
A fancy dress party is either something you love or hate. You have to go full out or not really bother. The first thing to find out is if there is a theme to the fancy dress party.
- Movie Characters
- Colour Theme
- Famous Musicians
- Retro – a certain decade, 20s, 60s 90s etc
- Jungle
- Fantasy
- Circus
- Celebrities
Masquerade Ball
I have to mention a Masquerade Ball in the New Year’s celebrations. It’s a very old tradition dating back centuries where suits and formal gowns are worn with a mask to cover the eyes. There is one annually in a hotel on the coast where I live and it’s one of the most beautiful parties I’ve ever been to. It’s dark, elegant and mysterious. A perfect way to celebrate the coming new year with friends.

At Home Ideas
There is a strong chance that we will all be celebrating New Year’s at home this year. You don’t have to sit around in your comfy pj’s seeing in the new year, you can get glammed up in your posh frock and have a dance in the living room. As long as household restrictions are not in place you could invite a couple of friends over and really have a great night! Treat it as a party then a sleepover. Other ideas include cocktail night, board game night, make TikTok videos, scrapbooking and journaling memories from the past year.
Whether you are celebrating at home or at a party, dress up and have fun! You truly cannot go wrong with these New Year’s Eve style ideas.
Happy New Year!!
