It’s that time of year again! World Book Day is nearly upon us! It’s a special time of year when we all share our love of books and encourage reading amongst children. World Book Day wants every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own. They want to see more children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, get into a life-long habit of reading for pleasure. I’ve joined up with Books2Door to share some World Book Day Costume Hacks. Not all of us will have the spare money to go out and buy a new costume, so I’ve put together a few tips on costume hacks!
Think Ahead
My daughter L is very much into Harry Potter at the moment and wants to dress up as Harry for her World Book Day at school on Thursday. Thinking ahead, last year I found a great competition to enter to win a Harry Potter costume and luckily I won. I got to choose the size so I got one she would grow into! That means this year we are all sorted without spending any money! So my first tip is to think ahead and go on and enter giveaways for costumes that could come in handy in the future! OK, so this might not work for you this year as we are getting short of time. But one for next year!
Borrow a Costume
Put a shout out for costumes that other kids have grown out of locally. Join your school parents/village Facebook group and see if a neighbour has a costume or an item of clothing you can use for a costume.
Make the accessories
Get your crafting kits out and make the mask, hat, or sword and shield. There are plenty of free templates on Pinterest you can use to cut your hat or mask out on a piece of card. For the sword cover it in some foil! Done! We have been practising making our own colourful pirate hat!
Facepainting
Make the costume all about the face! Use face painting as the main feature of the costume, which can then be one colour from what you have at home. As an example, your child could dress up as a lion. Wear all yellow – leggings and a t-shirt is fine. Then a wonderful lion’s face painted on.
Look In The Fancy Dress Drawer
We have a fancy dress drawer where the girls keep all their dressing up clothes. I’ve had a good look through and going to repurpose one of L’s old Halloween costumes for Dottie’s World Book Day costume. She loves Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, so I’m going to turn her old witches costume into Mrs Witch from the show.
Second Hand Selling Sites
Have a browse of the second-hand selling sites like eBay, Vinted, Facebook Market place etc for a second-hand costume. They might only wear the costume once, therefore you don’t want to spend too much on it. Also, you can sell on afterward.
I’m sure whatever costume you come up with for World Book Day will be absolutely fine and your child will love it! Make the experience fun!
