Helping Your Child Develop a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is where your child knows how to build on their skills, learn to enjoy school better, and appreciate all the things they hope to learn. It helps children with their independence, promotes good learning habits and makes learning in the classroom a whole lot more fun for them. This nursery in Gloucestershire shares some key advice on how to develop this understanding in children.

Helping Your Child Develop a Growth Mindset

Give your child new ways to grow

It’s a good idea to give your child new opportunities to grow and add character. If they don’t, they won’t be able to understand how new skills can be picked up or even built on in the first place. You should be providing a platform for your child to further develop their skills as they get older. There’s a lot your child can explore when they are allowed to explore new ways to pick up their skills, so encourage them to find themselves.

Help your child solve new problems

Mixing up your child’s skills and finding new things to solve will make things a lot easier for them when they feel confident and inspired. Your child can’t navigate new problems if they are never exposed to them, of course, so ensure that you change things up on a regular basis.

From board games to playing physical activities, there’s all sorts of things your child can learn about and appreciate when it comes to solving lots of different problems. Then, as your child gets older, they will become more confident in solving lots of other issues and what they can do to handle their resilience.

Lean into your child’s interests

You can promote positive thinking attitudes if you let your child learn how to manage themselves through some of their favourite activities. There will always be opportunities for your child to learn something new and exciting from the things that they enjoy the most. This is where you can help your child learn more about a certain hobby or activity they appreciate. It also makes things a lot more fun and interesting for your child when they are learning something new about what they love.

Be proud of your child’s accomplishments

There’s a lot your child can learn from the biggest highlights in their life. Hype up your child when they do something special, or when they have a good time at an event, if they have done a good job in school, or something else. Ensure you highlight every good thing they have tried out or achieved instead of focusing on the only times they do something perfectly. Your child won’t know how to progress further if you only remind them of when they have achieved higher scores in a maths test. It’s always about what your child does every day to impress you and how they have shown progress.

Having a growth mindset will help your child think confidently, improve their self-esteem, and more. But it is something that your child has to work at over a long time – they will need all the parental support they can hope to receive.
