5 Things to Think About Before Becoming a Business Owner

Launching your very own business is exciting, but it isn’t something you should jump into without thorough preparation. There are many things to think about and you may need to hire a Startup Coach or get training in certain areas, but with lots of hard work and determination, you should end up with something that you can be proud of. Here are five things to consider before you get started on your journey of becoming a business owner:

Things to Think About Before Becoming a Business Owner

1. What Are Your Long-Term Goals?

As a business owner, you will need to start thinking about the future. Living life on a whim will become a thing of the past. Without a plan in place, it will be difficult to determine whether or not you are moving in the right direction and at an adequate pace. What’s more, it may be harder for you to take out a loan, should you need one. Think about your short-term and long-term goals so that you have something to work towards and a way of monitor your progress.

2. Who is Your Target Market?

As a business owner, you need to know everything about your target audience. How old are they? Are they male or female? What is their average income? What lifestyle factors determine their buying patterns? If you understand the demographic of your target audience, it will be easier to decide on things like your branding, how much your charge and how to advertise.

3. Who are Your Competitors?

Understanding who you’re going to be up against in the market is an important way to help you determine what your key selling points are. What sets you apart from the crowd? Research your competitors and find out more about works for them – why are they so successful?

4. How Will You Market Your Business?

When it comes to marketing, your options are endless. There’s social media, traditional signage, emails, promotional merchandise, and tonnes of other possibilities. Bear in mind that what works for one company might not work for you, so there will be a little bit of trial and error at play before you find a technique that works for you.

5. Will You Need to Hire Staff?

In the early days, you might be able to operate as a one-man band. If not, it’s worth speaking to a recruitment agency to help you seek out suitable employees to join you in your company. Your employees will need a contract and your business will need to be adequately insured to protect you against claims made by staff. What’s more, you’ll have to register as an employer with HMRC and be aware of things like holiday, sick pay and maternity or paternity pay rules. It’s not as straight forward as giving someone a job and rolling with it.
