Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility, and breathing to boost physical and mental well being. Yoga is a series of postures like the headstand, shoulderstand, plough and fish. They help you to breathe, increase your core strength and flexibility.

The overall benefits of yoga are to build strength, awareness, and harmony in both the mind and body. Physical benefits include increased muscle strength, tone, and flexibility. It can help to improve your energy and cardio health and help you maintain a balanced metabolism. Also, you may see weight loss and increased protection from injuries.

You should use a yoga mat if you practice yoga. Why? Well if you take a yoga class, it will mark you space on the floor. If you are on a hard floor surface like wood or laminate, a lovely soft yoga will protect your knees, hips and joints especially in certain yoga positions. It’s good practice to use one for safety reasons, it provides you the ability to press your palms and feet down into a stretch without worrying about slipping and hurting yourself. It will stop your sweaty hands from slipping on the floor and it will provide a clean surface for you to practice, especially if your are outdoors.

There are lots of variables to consider when buying a good yoga mat. Such as texture, thickness, weight and what it’s made of. If you are carrying it around with you, you might be needing a lightweight yoga mat. You can buy some really pretty yoga mats made from made of eco-friendly PVC to suit your style.

A smooth textured yoga mat is apparently better for extra grip and used for hard core yoga sessions where you build up a sweat. Textured mats are perfect for a gentler hatha yoga practice or if you tend to do a lot of restorative yoga.

Whatever yoga mat you decide to buy, the comfortable factor is important to you. My daughter loves to practice yoga from videos on TV. It’s a gentle form of exercise for all ages.

  1. I used to love yoga but haven’t been able to find a good local class for ages. It’s so important to have a good mat.

  2. Perhaps schools should consider teaching yoga. An early introduction could mean reaping the benefits. I have done some yoga in later life, having thought yoga looked too difficult when I saw pictures of yoga positions when in teens. Yet there is much variety, types of yoga, etc.

    Yoga mat has usually been available when I have attended classes / sessions. So good to know there are various types, and suitability.
