How To Approach A Divorce When You Have Kids

It’s not something that you necessarily want to think about, but unfortunately, many marriages do end in divorce. Because you never know what might happen in the future, it’s a good idea to have at least some clue about how you might approach such a situation, were it to occur. Nobody really knows how they will act when the time comes, but it’s good to at least have thought about it in advance so that you can ensure you are going to have the best chance of responding to the situation.

When you have kids, something like a divorce can be even messier than usual, and there will be even more that you want to think about in order to make sure you can approach it as well as possible. With that in mind, we have put together some of the things that you might want to bear in mind as you think about approaching a divorce with kids in the picture.

Putting The Kids First

Most parents would agree that the really important thing is to make sure you are putting the kids first. As long as you have that rule of thumb in mind, you are going to find that it’s so much easier to go through the whole process, and you will cause less stress on the whole as well. What does it actually mean to put kids first, however? One of the main elements to this is usually that you will need to make sure you know what your kids want and how you can get it for them. That doesn’t mean spoiling them – a common mistake with divorced parents of children – it just means that you are doing all you can to understand what they need so you can better make the right decisions.

A big part of this includes talking with your kids about what is going on. Being able to openly communicate with your children is vital for ensuring that you can understand what is going on for them and what they might need, as well as letting them know what is happening. A lot of families make the mistake of not communicating with the children, and this rarely ends well.

You should probably find that putting the kids first comes quite naturally, but in case it does not, it is worth reminding one another of the value of this, even as you go through your divorce.

Avoiding Fighting In Front Of Them

At the same time, you should make sure that you are not fighting in front of your children, if possible. You should be able to avoid fighting in front of the kids if you put the necessary work into it. This is important because it means that you are going to be keeping the drama down to a minimum in the household, and that helps to keep the peace for your children on the whole. It also means that they are not going to be upset by the idea that their parents hate each other – which can be a very distressing experience for any child.

It can be a good idea to have plans in place to ensure that you can avoid fighting in front of the kids. If you feel an argument coming on, consider trying to calm each other down. That can be challenging to actually do, but it is worth the effort for how much it helps your children to be happy and to at least not have that added tension in their lives.

Reminding Them You Love Them

It might never be a question that you don’t love your kids, for you at least. But for young children, it can be all too easy to think that this is the case. Remember that young children have a tendency to make the whole world about them. This is a normal part of our developing psychology as children, and it’s one reason you need to make sure you are clear about it not being the child’s fault. Reminding them that you love them is therefore hugely important if you want to achieve this as best as you can.

This can be done overtly in speech – by simply telling them you love them. Or it can also be achieved through actions at the same time, making it clear that you love them – but again be careful that you don’t simply give them gifts in order to show you love them. It’s more about having valuable ways of showing you care. As long as you can do that, you are going to be in a much better position with your children, and they are going to feel the effects of the divorce in a much less dire manner.

Trying Not To Feel Guilty

Parents often feel guilty about getting divorced when they have children, and it is easy to see why. It can be all too easy to blame yourself, as well as each other, for letting the marriage fail. But this is altogether not a hugely useful approach to take, and nor is it true: there is no real blame in getting divorced, it’s just one of those things that can happen, and it does happen to a lot of people. The problem with feeling guilty is that it actually often ends up spilling over onto the children, with the result being that they might feel more guilty as well. Clearly, this is not what you are going for, so you can see why it’s so important to avoid feeling too guilty yourself.

If you are struggling with this, you might want to think about seeking some therapy. This is something that many people can benefit from hugely, so it’s definitely worth thinking about if you want to make sure that you are avoiding this kind of problem. The right therapy could make all the difference in the world regarding what you need to do to be happier in the process.

Getting Legal Help

With any divorce, including one where there are kids involved, you need to have legal assistance from a Minneapolis divorce attorney (or one in your local area), and this is something that you should seek out as early as possible. The better your legal assistance, the better a chance you have in your divorce. As for the children, this is relevant there too, because there is the thorny issue of custody to consider here as well of course. To make that as smooth as possible, so that it doesn’t upset the kids too much and everything gets what they deserve easily and quickly, be sure to seek out some legal counsel on your divorce as soon as possible.

Talking About Each Other

The way you talk about each other in front of your kids is hugely important. It can be so damaging when you talk about each other in a way that is harmful or abusive. When your children hear you talk about your ex-partner in this kind of way, it disrupts their opinion of both of you – and the result on their development and the rest of their lives can be hugely significant in a very negative way. So make sure that you are not doing this, and be sure to talk to your spouse to ensure that they don’t either. It is a much better way to be for everyone, and it will mean that your children have a much better chance of true happiness in the future as adults themselves.

Being Truthful

Throughout all of this, however, you should also be truthful with your children about what is happening and why. That doesn’t mean that you need to tell them all the gritty details about what has been going on, but it does mean that you should not lie to them, and that you need to make sure you are doing everything you can to inform them of the truth. The more you hide from them, the worse off everyone will be, so this is something, in particular, to make sure you avoid. Being truthful can sometimes be hard in these circumstances, but it is absolutely worthwhile, so make sure that you are doing this and encouraging your spouse to do the same.

Getting Everyone Ready For Changes

Part of being honest involves letting your kids know that there are some changes to come. They need to be able to prepare for these changes as best as they can, so this is something that you are going to want to think about as much as possible. Let them know, as far as you can for their age, what it is that they can expect, and what life is likely to look like from now on. These changes are going to be much less damaging if the children are ready for them, after all.

If you can bear all that in mind, your children should be in a much better place, and the divorce is going to be much less messy on the whole.
