When Your Body Does Its Own Thing: A Small Guide to the Big Changes of Puberty

One morning, you wake up, look in the mirror, and ask yourself, “Who is this?” Puberty knocks on the door.

If you are currently in that phase, or have a teenager around you, it is absolutely normal for everything to seem a little “chaotic”. Hormones are playing their rounds, skin is rebelling, and moods are changing faster than the weather in April.

But the good news is that you can get through it much easier than you think. You just need to know what’s going on and how to respond to those changes, instead of being caught off guard.

What Actually Happens in Puberty?

Puberty is like a major system update, just a little less glamorous and a lot more unpredictable. Suddenly, you start growing faster, your voice changes, new hairs appear, your skin becomes more sensitive, and at the same time, you form your style and identity, and you care more and more about how you look.

We know, it sounds scary, but that’s not weird at all. The teenage years are a time when you really get to know yourself and lay the foundation for the confidence you will carry later.

Skin Under Attack

One of the first things everyone notices are changes in the skin. Pimples, blackheads, redness…nothing glamorous. And yes, no one jumps for joy when something “pops up”, but hey, almost 54% of teenagers have visible pimples, which means you’re neither the first nor the last in this club. Good care, however, really makes a huge difference.

No, you don’t need a 10-step skincare routine, but the basics:

  • Mild washing gel
  • Light hydration
  • SPF (mandatory)

Hair All Over

Now we come to one of those changes that many notice, but hardly anyone wants to talk about. A hair appears where there was nothing yesterday. And then another one. And five more..

The good thing is that today there are many ways to deal with it—from shaving, waxing, depilation… to permanent methods, such as electro-epilation.

If you’ve ever googled it, you’ve probably heard that electrolysis for teens is completely safe. It is actually the only method of permanent hair removal.

If your hair creates insecurity or appears in places where it just bothers you, it’s not bad to know that you have a choice. Puberty is complicated enough—why not make one thing easier on yourself?

A Merry-Go-Round Mood

Do you remember those days when you’re in a perfect mood in the morning, and in the afternoon you wonder why literally everything annoys you? Yes, it also comes with hormonal changes.

One study shows that puberty hormones increase stress responses, so mood can “jump” much faster than before—it’s not you, it’s the hormones running their show.

What can help:

  • A little more sleep
  • Physical activity
  • Less time on the phone before bed
  • Conversations

Puberty is emotionally demanding, but not dangerous. It’s just… intense.

Self-Confidence

All these changes come at the same time when you start thinking more about your appearance, society, and where you belong. And self-confidence is then like a balloon—it fills up easily, but it can burst just as easily.

A little secret:

All teenagers think that everyone else is handling puberty better than they are.

Spoiler alert:

No one has a clue what they’re doing. Everyone is just pretending to know.

Solutions That Help Make Everything Look Easier

Here are a few little things that really make a difference:

  1. Introduce mini routines: We’re talking about basic habits that make you feel better. Washing, clean hair, and light skin care.
  2. Don’t compare yourself to others: Your puberty, their puberty. Everyone goes through different stages.
  3. Think long-term: If you’re struggling with ingrown hairs, hormonal changes, or overly sensitive skin, learn about your options.
  4. Talk about it: It always helps. Parents, friends, experts, anyone who will listen.
  5. Don’t forget the humor: If you can’t laugh at yourself during puberty, it will be much harder for you afterwards.

In the End

Puberty isn’t a big deal—it’s just a noisy, crazy, sometimes stressful, but completely normal part of growing up. And you go through all these changes not because “something is wrong”, but because your body is preparing for the next level of life.

And when you have to go through it, it’s better to know what awaits you and how you can make it easier for yourself, from skin care to mental health care to options like electrolysis.

It all passes. And you become stronger, smarter and self-confident than you believe.
