4 Health Conditions to Look Out for as You Age

As we get older, the resiliency of our physical health starts to weaken. While there are steps we can take to lower the risk of illness and disease, our vulnerabilities are somewhat predetermined.

At the same time, you don’t have to wait for illness to strike, and you can reduce your chances of developing issues by taking steps beforehand. Here are four health conditions to look out for as you age!

4 Health Conditions to Look Out for as You Age

1. Essential Tremor and Parkinson’s Disease

Tremors are uncontrollable shaking that negatively influence daily life. A person with essential tremor or Parkinson’s disease may have difficulty writing, drinking from a glass, and using their hands with complete control.

To prepare against onset of the conditions and to maintain good health, remain self-aware, and have any shaking checked out as soon as possible.

Reviewing essential tremor vs Parkinson’s, it is evident that although the two are different, they do share symptoms of tremor that begin late in adulthood. Essential tremors can also result in tremors or shakes in other parts of the body like the legs, the voice, and the head.

With Parkinson’s, there is a loss of brain cells over time. These losses disrupt the flow of body movement, causing additional symptoms. If you experience tremors while resting, you may be at risk for Parkinson’s disease and should contact your doctor immediately.

2. Fatal Flu (Pneumonia)

Elderly individuals are more susceptible to flu symptoms because their immunity is not as strong. If you experience flu-like symptoms, it is essential to get checked out by your doctor.

You should also speak to your provider to determine if getting the flu shot is something you should continue doing every year to improve the odds with preventative care. If it is not treated early, the flu can turn into pneumonia, which can be fatal in older adults.

3. Dementia and Alzheimer’s

Cognitive decline is, to some extent, a natural part of the aging process. At the same time, there are conditions like Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia that come on suddenly and act as silent killers. A thick plaque builds up in the brain, causing damage and inhibiting cell repair and mind restoration.

Persons with either condition begin to lose touch with their memory and their understanding of where they are. It is important to get regular brain scans and cognitive evaluations as you get older to ensure that you are not at risk for these conditions.

Regular evaluations are especially important for individuals who know that these diseases run in their families, as they may be more likely to inherit these issues themselves.

4. High Blood Pressure

It is essential to go to the doctor and check your blood pressure to get started with medication. Building a healthy lifestyle and including a healthy diet and exercise routine is also important for reducing your risk of developing high blood pressure as you age.

It becomes more challenging to offset a poor diet and lack of exercise as we get older. As a result, we experience blood pressure issues. Our chances of developing high blood pressure increase if there are genetic predispositions and if we regularly experience high levels of stress. Left unchecked, high blood pressure can be fatal and may result in stroke or heart attack.

Be Active With Preventative Care

Looking out for health conditions as you age is a significant aspect of preventative care. Understanding that our health is weakened as we grow older puts us in the driver’s seat to address symptoms and avoid potential health issues. With the right preventative care and action steps, you can reduce your risk of developing these health conditions as you age.
