Reading Chest Book Subscription Review | AD

if you are a regular reader of my blog you will know how much I love to read. My mum passed her love of books down to me and now I’m passing this down to my girls. L is in reception and before she started school last September she could already read books ahead of her age. She is a proper bookworm just like me! This last week she has been put on the accelerated reader programme at school, and I couldn’t be any more proud of her. So when the Reading Chest book subscription service got in touch, I knew this would be an ideal subscription for her.

What is Reading Chest?

Reading Chest is “The book rental service specialising in reading scheme books for children aged 4 to 9 years.”

It was founded by a teacher and mum frustrated with the lack of reading resources she had at home. Reading Chest wants to make it easier for parents to help children enjoy learning to read, they aim to be an additional resource, which if you have a child who can’t get enough books to read it’s amazing!

How Does Reading Chest Work?

So parents pay a monthly subscription fee and their children receive regular personalised deliveries of books, perfectly suited to their interests and reading level. You can set the reading level using their book band level they are on at school. You can also select your child’s reading scheme. L is on the Oxford Reading Tree scheme with Floppy’s Phonics so I have set her account to these so she will only receive those books. There are 12 schemes in total, so you could have a mixture of them all if you wish. You can choose to have all fiction or all non-fiction books. You can make a favourite list. On your account, you can view the upcoming books you will receive through the post. If there is one, for example, coming up that they have read at school you can add it to the bin so that one wouldn’t be sent out. I love this feature!

You start with an initial delivery of 4 or 6 reading books depending on your package, then simply return the books in the pre-paid envelope and wait for some more to arrive in the post. – It really is that simple! I must say that the book swaps arrive very quickly as well. We were very impressed with the speed!

Overall Thoughts

I can’t believe we haven’t found this book subscription before! It’s brilliant! Like most children, L is so excited when she receives post and this just adds to it. She loves posting the books back when she is finished with them to see what arrives next. I’m really pleased with the wide range of books they offer and the additional elements such as the reward charts – great if you have a reluctant reader, and the book bag – ideal for keeping the Reading Chest books separate from school books. The book service is extremely fast. I am definitely recommending Reading Chest!

  1. My great grandson loves his books and I am sure he would enjoy this subscription, what a lovely idea

  2. I really like the sound of this subscription! My son loves reading and he would really appreciate this. I love that you can see your upcoming books so you don’t get books they’ve already read.

  3. This sounds so good – and really good value too! I’m definitely going to look into it for Autumn.

  4. I’d love to do this for my Son – he’s a nervous reading at just turned 5 and I think this would really help.

  5. Books have always played a big part of my own and my childrens childhood. My neices and nephews love to come to my house and go to the bookcase to pick out a book. These look great!
