The Surf House by Lucy Clarke – Book Review

I finished this book over the weekend and it’s still giving me the creeps! There’s something about Lucy Clarke’s writing that sweeps you away, and The Surf House is no exception. Set against the dramatic cliffs of Morocco, far from the bustling souks and city streets, this novel takes readers into a world of sun, sea, and secrets. Clarke has mastered the art of blending breathtaking locations with gripping suspense for sure!

I preordered this stunning limited collector’s edition back in January and I’m so pleased I did! It’s beautiful!

A Setting That Comes to Life

From the very first page, Clarke immerses us in the rugged beauty of Morocco’s coastline. The Surf House itself, perched high above the ocean, is both an escape and a trap. A place where free-spirited travellers gather in search of adventure, but also where shadows linger. You can almost feel the heat on your skin, hear the waves crashing below, and taste the salt in the air.

For me, the surfing theme hit close to home. As someone who lives in Cornwall, where the surf culture is woven into daily life. I found the descriptions of the sea and the thrill of the waves incredibly beautiful. It gave me feelings of Fistral beach. This picture I took a couple of weeks ago! Clarke captures the magnetic pull of the ocean perfectly. The way it can be both a source of freedom and something far more dangerous.

An Unfolding Mystery

At the heart of The Surf House is Bea, a young woman who arrives at this isolated retreat seeking solace after a frightening experience in Marrakesh. But she soon finds herself tangled in a mystery that refuses to stay buried. A year earlier, another woman, the same age as Bea, vanished without a trace from this very place. The more Bea learns about the missing woman’s life, the more unsettling the parallels become. It’s a slow, creeping sense of dread. One that builds with each chapter, keeping you turning the pages long into the night.

Clarke is a master at suspense. She carefully layers her storytelling, revealing secrets piece by piece, until the tension becomes almost unbearable. Just when you think you have it figured out, another twist sends you spiraling in a different direction. And the ending! Oh, the ending! I didn’t want to believe what I was reading. It was shocking, heartbreaking, and yet, the only possible conclusion.

A Cast of Intriguing Characters

One of Clarke’s strengths is her ability to create deeply human characters. Each person who crosses Bea’s path at The Surf House has a story of their own, and they all feel so real. Flawed, layered, and utterly compelling. As Bea tries to uncover the truth, she must navigate complicated relationships, blurred loyalties, and the growing suspicion that someone in The Surf House knows more than they’re letting on.

This is not just a mystery. It’s also a story about trust, survival, and the lengths we go to in order to protect ourselves. Clarke explores the bonds between women, the fragility of friendships, and the way past traumas can shape our present choices. It’s powerful, thought-provoking, and deeply emotional!
