Wear ’em Out Review – The Benefits of Reusable Pads | AD

We try to do our bit and live in a more sustainable way. Looking back now back in the 1980s my mum was all for doing her bit even back then. My siblings and I all wore terry cloth nappies, it’s great hearing her stories about the washing line full of white terry cloths bleaching in the sun! So when I was asked if I wanted to try out reusable sanitary pads from Wear ’em Out I couldn’t wait to give them a go.

I’ve heard a lot about “period pants” but not much about reusable sanitary pads. The lovely people at Wear ’em Out kindly sent me a pamper box with everything I need to get me on my reusable pad journey. Now as someone who has very heavy periods, I’m interested to know if the larger pads will work for me. The box arrived at the right time so I got stuck into using them straight away!

Before I get properly into the Wear ’em Out review here is why we should all consider the switch to reusable pads.

“Because we can’t carry on like this”

This is so true. A little fact for you from Wear ’em Out. A single disposable pad or tampon takes longer to degrade than the lifespan of the person who wore it, in fact, it can take up to 800 years! Imagine all that landfill. Yes, that’s 200,000 tonnes of menstrual waste hitting the UK landfills per year. Shocking! I’m shocked reading that fact as I had no idea!

Printed layer – 100% Breathable Polyester
Internal layers – 70% Polyester, 30% Polyamide
Top layer – 50% Modal 50% Polyester
Ribbing – 98% Organic combed Cotton, 2% Lycra

Mega Flo Reusable Sanitary Pads

As I mentioned earlier I have heavy flow periods, Normally lasting for the first 3 days. So the Mega Flo was my first one to try. They are easy to pop onto your knickers and they stay in place. This is MEGA important! I must say they are soft and comfy as well.

You can also get another size up for night time, or after birth use. It’s called the Mega Mega Flo!

I received the Wear ’em Out X Liz Harry Limited Edition ‘We Bloom’ design, reusable Mega Flo period pad and one of their standard designs.

Size – 7 cm (2.75 Inches) wide at the middle and 26 cm (10.25 Inches) long

Medium Flo Reusable Sanitary Pads

The regular flow Medium Flo pad is your go-to for those in-between, business-as-usual period days, and can also be used for leaky bladder days! I found the medium pad suitable after my first 3 heavy days.

Size – 6.5 cm (2.55 inches) wide at the middle and 22 cm (8.6 inches) long

Mini Flo Reusable Sanitary Pads

I didn’t need to use the Mini Flo’s for my period, they are just that bit too small for me. So I’m going to pass them over to my mum for her bladder leaks. Which she blames us, 4 children, for having!!

Size – 6.3 cm (2.45 inches) wide at the middle and 17.5 cm (6.8 inches) long

Wear ’em Out – Wear Me Wash Me Out and About Bag

Wear ’em Out have really thought of everything! It’s a great idea to also have the Wear Me Wash Me out and about bag with your pads. It keeps everything in one place until you can wash them at home.

The bag has 2 individual sections, one side labeled ‘wear me’ and the other labeled ‘wash me’, so you know what’s where! It has a single zip across the top and poppers on the side making a secure seal and a size reducing option. It’s made of washable, waterproof fabric and can be put in your machine (up to 40°) for a freshen-up, followed by an air dry.

Storage bag for reusable sanitary pads

The storage bag is the right size to hold everything. You can use it to store your rinsed out pads ready for putting in the machine, or you can use it to store your freshly washed pads ready for next month, you could even use it for both. To wash, just pop it in the machine, separately, along with your used pads, and it’s ready to go for next month.

Washing your Wear ’em Out Pads

Rinse in cold water as soon as you take them off. This will minimise staining. When you are ready you can wash the pads by hand, or wash them in the shower with you! They can also go in with the rest of the laundry up to a 40°C wash. Don’t use fabric conditioner as it will affect the fabric on the pad and will in turn affect the pads’ absorbency.

Drying your Wear ’em Out Pads

You can hang them up to air-dry, or in an airing cupboard. But don’t put them on direct heat or into a tumble dryer as this may cause shrinkage.

Overall Thoughts

I absolutely love them! Comfortable, easy to use and there isn’t the fear that you have forgotten to buy your pads, as you already have them accessible! Plus they stay in place and don’t bunch up!!!!

I will have to get a couple of the Mega Mega Flo Pad’s for night time use, as the Mega Flo doesn’t quite do the job for me. But I see this as an investment! I think if you look after the pads well, they will look after you and last for a few years.
