Relax and Restore: The Hobbies Mothers Need in Their Lives

The importance of having the right hobbies cannot be underestimated. When you’re trying to find hobbies for your kids to enjoy, you can invariably overlook the hobbies that you should be partaking in. As mothers, we need hobbies that are relaxing, but restorative. Having the right hobbies that are restorative for you can make you feel a connection to your old life before children came along, but it can also ensure that you feel more at ease in yourself so you are able to be a better mother. So what are the best types of hobbies that can do a lot of these things?

Fishing

Most mothers out there would not consider fishing to be a restorative activity, but the fact is that when you are sitting by yourself, you only have your thoughts to contend with. You soon realise that all the negative thoughts that occur go flying by. You soon enter into this zen state of mind, where you can begin to truly enjoy being alone, rather than worrying about shopping lists! If you really want to get deeper into fishing, there are plenty of things that you need, such as a fishing licence, but you could also benefit from the right apparel and equipment.

You could use something like Salty Crew fishing clothes if you want to dress yourself up, but you need to make sure you are prepared for all weathers. Looking after yourself while fishing is important so you can sit around and, in effect, do nothing. It takes a while to get used to, and remember, does it really matter if you catch a fish at the end of it all when you’ve spent time restoring your capabilities?

A Musical Instrument

Relaxing into playing music is not so easy when you don’t know how to play an instrument. That’s why it’s important for you to find an instrument that doesn’t frustrate you every time you look at it. If you really are interested in learning an instrument, you can reap the benefits of learning and the frustration that comes along with it can help you in the long run. But if you’re looking for something that distracts you from your anxieties and is also cathartic, something like the drums can make a big difference.

But rather than investing in a fully-fledged drum kit, you could join something like a drum circle. They are incredibly inspiring, and the fact is you don’t need to have any musical acumen to do it properly. When you start to get into something like rhythm, it makes you feel like you are connecting with other people, but it’s also something that can spur you on into other aspects of music if you really want to. If you are trying to avoid the frustrations of learning your favourite song and not quite getting it, a drum circle can make a big difference.

Journalling

You may not necessarily think about journalling as a way to relax, especially if there are a lot of negative thoughts you need to get out on paper. However, you’ve got to recognise the emotional aspects of journalling. We all feel that there are things in our life that we need to get out of our system, but if we are not feeling particularly communicative with our partners or we have the feeling that our thoughts are not necessarily productive ones because there’s bigger fish to fry in the household, this is where writing can do a lot to help us.

When we start to get our thoughts onto paper, it helps us to to make contact with something in a physical sense but it also makes us feel like we’ve got something out of our system. That’s why it’s recommended for you to journal before you go to sleep. When you start to get things out of your head onto paper, whether it is random gibberish or a shopping list or things to do, the most important thing we have to remember when it comes to unwinding and relaxing is that these things actually leave our brains. Anything that’s left hanging in your mind before you go to sleep can weigh heavily on you and potentially distract or disrupt your sleep.

Hobbies serve many purposes and these are some good examples, but if you are thinking about something that you used to do a lot but now you can’t because children came along, even making a little bit of time to do it on the weekends is your right, so you can relax and restore.
