Today is World Autism Awareness Day. As an autism family, it’s always a special day for us and our little girl. As she gets older, I don’t write as much about her on here anymore. She is unable to communicate her consent, so I feel it’s inappropriate to potentially go against her wishes. She is the light of our life and has truly made us see the world differently. From the early days of uncertainty to navigating the educational system, the NHS, local authorities and advocating for her son’s needs, Hunt’s journey is one that many parents of a neurodiverse child will relate to. Her ability to articulate the emotional highs and lows makes this book a brutally compelling read.

One of the standout aspects of Autism… A Mother’s Story is how it raises awareness of the realities that many families face, including my own. I could totally relate to the page about how Peter would only wear the one t-shirt and never take it off! My daughter is very attached to a navy dress with watermelons on it! Hunt’s narrative serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and acceptance. It’s books like these that help break down misconceptions and create a more inclusive society for autistic individuals.

And you really don’t know what the future can bring. It’s also an insightful read for teachers, caregivers, and anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of what life can be like for families navigating autism. Hunt’s honest, heartfelt storytelling makes it accessible and engaging for all readers.
Final Thoughts
As a parent to an autistic child and someone who is always seeking out resources and stories that shed light on autism, I found Autism… A Mother’s Story to be an inspiring yet tough read.
When I read the part about how they were told it would be a 9 month wait for the full assessment and then got the appointment in 6 weeks, I did choke on my drink! Years ago, the waiting times were so very different to today’s. We waited just over 2 years for an assessment/diagnosis and I know some people are waiting much longer.
Toni Hunt’s journey is one of strength, and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone looking for a personal and deeply moving perspective on autism. It’s just over 120 pages and I was able to read it in one evening!

Yes this is very true. We are battling our local council for a SEN school. It’s constant and never ending.
