Any parent can tell you that once you have kids, time seems to speed up. One minute you are bringing them home from the hospital and in a blink of an eye they are off to school. It just seems to speed up the older they get, which leaves parents wanting to make the most of their time with them. If you feel like you haven’t been connecting as much as you like, and you want to find ways to spend more quality time with your kids, here are four tips you can use.

Create a Weekly Family Day or Night
One of the best ways to ensure you spend quality time together is to make it a habit and schedule it in the calendar. Creating a weekly family day or night means everyone will keep their schedule clear on the given day/night and you know that regardless of how crazy the rest of the week is, you will have some time together.
There are a bunch of fun activities you and the family can engage in and it’s a good idea to shake things up so it doesn’t feel repetitive or boring. This is especially true if you have pre-teens or teens who, let’s face it, can get bored pretty quickly.
Some of the best activities for the family day or night include:
- Visiting local attractions
- Sightseeing in your town
- Going out to a restaurant
- Picnic at a park
- Hiking a local trail
- Movie day/night at home
- Board games or card games
- Video game competitions
- Baking or cooking together
- Crafting
You can also ask the kids for their input. What do they want to do as a family? Maybe each week you can rotate who gets to pick the activity to keep things fair.
Make Dinner a Mini Family Gathering Daily
On top of the weekly family day or night, making sure everyone has dinner together (if schedules allow) is a great way to have a quick check-in. This is an opportunity to ask about their day, ask about upcoming plans and share the connection. Dinner doesn’t need to be a big elaborate affair; even if it’s just 15 minutes that you all spend eating and talking, it’s still a daily connection.
Invest in Backyard Sports Equipment
If you have a child who is involved in a particular sport then this is the perfect opportunity to bond and spend time together. Sure, it’s great to attend their games but why not help them with practice at home? Depending on the sport they love, there may be backyard sports equipment you can purchase that makes it possible to train easier.
Baseball is an incredibly popular sport with kids and it’s also a great example of a sport they can practice at home. Why not invest in an L-screen for the backyard, which is great for an only child? If you have a large enough backyard, a pitching machine is another great option as it gives them a chance to practice batting.

And it’s not just baseball, as plenty of other sports are possible to practice at home if you provide the necessary equipment and take part in the training.
Take Interest In Your Child’s Hobbies
Not every child enjoys sports, and that’s fine, but as a parent, it’s important to learn what they do enjoy and then take an interest in their hobby. That doesn’t mean you need to share the same passion for it, but it does mean you need to ask questions and learn about it. You also need to ensure there are no barriers to pursuing their hobby.
These tips will make it possible for you to spend more quality time with your kids, which is time very well spent.
