Military life is completely different from any other type of role you will have in your life. There is structure, discipline, and a ready-made group of people you will have around you for the time you are in the military. Most people don’t stay in the military as a career and at some point will go back to living as a regular civilian.
The people that started in the military when they were 18 don’t really know any kind of adult life aside from how they lived during that time. This makes transitioning to civilian life somewhat difficult. They struggle with going through interviews for a job, finding friends, and living on their own. 1 – Find your people
When you are in the military you always have people around that are going through all the same events as you are. They understand you better than anybody since they are right there with you. When it comes to socializing or having a network, you don’t have to make any effort since you are surrounded by peers.
Once you get out and want to live as a civilian, finding friends is not always easy. You should look to find other ex-military members that are now civilians as it will be easier to be friends that have gone through common experiences.
The way to find them would be to look for organizations or clubs for ex-military members and stay active that way. You should also be on the lookout anywhere you go. Wearing a Marines hoodie, for example, will show people that you were a grunt and will have people approach you and start a conversation if they were also Marines.
2 – Get educated
One of the best reasons to join the military is the benefit of getting a free college education. The best way to make a smooth transition into civilian life is to be able to get a good job that helps you grow. Getting that job rests on the right degree.
Make sure to take advantage of this benefit and get your degree in a field that will give you a lot of opportunities for steady work and a good salary. Without a degree, you will surely struggle with a lot of low-paying jobs over the years.
3 – Take advantage of resources
Another advantage of being in the military is that there are a lot of resources for current members, ex-members, and veterans of war. There are many offices that are there to help you transition and give you the resources that you need. They will help you with your education by giving you the advice you need to go through the application process, for example.
Whatever issue you have, there is usually somebody that you can talk to that will get you the help that you need. This means that you are not alone and will have a helping hand to guide you.
