A couple of weeks back, both the girls had terrible colds and ear infections. The Friday evening was the worst and hardest night I’ve ever had as a parent. Baby Dottie had a terrible runny nose, high temperature and of course her ear infection. She was on antibiotics from the Doctor which we had seen earlier that afternoon and was having Calpol for her temperature. I was using Snufflebabe vapour rub from A New Parent’s Essential Kit on her chest and back to help her breathe easier. That stuff is a godsend for babies. I always have it ready in the cupboard for the girls when they get colds. (Please bare in mind that the vapour rub is only suitable from 3 months +)

Remembering being a new mum
I always knew I wanted to be a mum one day. Something in my DNA told me that I should be a mum and that was all there was to it. After 6 years of marriage I found out that my dream was to come true and my first baby was on the way. A trouble free pregnancy and birth followed and apart from a few stitches and a day of bed rest after I fainted in the hospital toilet all was straightforward.
That is until I took my son home. Why had no-one warned me how scary it was looking after a newborn? While I was in hospital all was serene. I fed him, changed him and napped on my bed while he slept. I waddled into the dining room for breakfast, lunch and dinner and chatted to the other new mums as we wandered around in our PJs. We were a happy bunch and had a ball teasing the contraceptive nurse when she suggested we would ever want to have sex again. I loved being a mum and thought I was a natural at it. Did I come down to earth with a bump when I left the cocoon of the maternity ward.
When you have a child your life changes in ways you never could have imagined. Suddenly your full attention is on another human being. Everything you do is ultimately for them. Taking care of yourself often becomes secondary. But it’s not wise to completely set aside your own needs. Parents who are tired, ill, and unfulfilled will not be able to offer the best care for their child. So it makes sense to factor your own health and happiness into the equation.
New babies require lots of stuff. From the moment you found you were pregnant you probably started putting together a maternity checklist. But I bet it didn’t include items for parents. Consider setting up your own list of items to keep you fit, well, and happy during the early years. It needn’t cost a fortune; just a few items to make life a little easier.
- A few paperbacks for when the baby is sleeping, and you’re not
- Magazines to leaf through for the scarce 10-minute break
- Bath products for R&R
- Comfy lounge pants and slippers for 4:00 am feeds and the rest of day if needed
- List of Netflix and Prime films and series
- Healthy food and the odd treat
- Music playlist for quick workouts and relaxing
