How To Find Inner Peace

In this increasingly busy world that we live in, it can be hard to find spiritual peace. I know in my life finding 2 minutes peace is tough! But when I can I find my inner peace by reading a great book.

Here are some tips to help you find yours…

Start Eating Healthily

There’s no better way to feel happy and healthy than by making sure that what goes into your body is healthy. Let’s get one thing straight – no one is saying that you need to only eat fresh fruits and vegetables and cut out the chocolate altogether. That just isn’t a practical or enjoyable way to live. Instead, you should do your best to make your food from fresh, to cut out any nasty chemicals and preservatives that are found in convenience foods and to cut down your salt and sugar intake. This will be good for your blood pressure, your teeth and your moods. You should also make sure that your portion size isn’t too big – a lot of people gain weight simply by eating too much. You should also make sure that you don’t feel guilty about what you eat. Some potato chips and cookies every now and then aren’t so bad. ‘Clean’ eating is a myth because it implies that some food is dirty. Eat everything in moderation and you’ll be just fine.

Start Practising Yoga

Of all the exercises, yoga is the one that’s most likely to bring you a deep sense of inner peace. Developed in India thousands of years ago, yoga is suitable for everyone no matter what skill and fitness level they’re at. You might not think of yourself as very flexible but if you do some yoga every day, you’ll notice this changing quickly as it gets easier and easier to touch your toes. YouTube yoga guru Adriene says that her motto is ‘Find what feels good’, which is a great way to look at yoga in general – it combines breathing and stretching to make you feel invigorated and relaxed at the same time. If you don’t feel confident enough to go to a yoga class just yet, then here is a great resource for those who want to learn how to do yoga at home. Doing some practice in the privacy of your own bedroom will make you feel happy about trying out your newfound yoga skills in public in no time.

Switch Off Your Technology

Technology is incredibly useful but also the bane of a lot of our existences. It’s great being able to contact people whenever you need to – you can tell your kids to come home for dinner, you can ask your partner to pick up some milk, you can tell your boss you’re running ten minutes late – but at the same time, being constantly available can take its toll on you, particularly if you’re expected to pick up work calls and emails in the evenings. You need to prioritise yourself and your own time – turn off your phone and computer at a certain time every evening to focus on your family life and thoroughly detoxing from the day. Not only will it make you more relaxed, but turning off your tech an hour before you go to bed will also help you fall asleep more easily.

Learn To Be Assertive

One of the most important things to do in life is to be assertive – and unfortunately it’s also one of the hardest things to do. We’ve all experienced that flutter of intense irritation at ourselves when a situation doesn’t go our way when we could have just opened our mouths to be more assertive – so it’s time to get rid of that irritation and to learn to speak your mind. A lot of women don’t ask for what they want enough at work – if there’s a project that you’d be great at, ask your boss if you can get in on it. Ask for more money than you think you’ll get – chances are, it’ll work out – and apply for jobs that you don’t think you’re completely qualified for, making sure that you can turn the experience you already have into the sort of experience they need. Be assertive, cool and calm, and make sure you know that your voice deserves to be heard.

Spend Time Alone

One of the most important things in this life is to feel comfortable with yourself. Not everyone is okay with spending a lot of time by themselves – there are plenty of extroverts in the world who get their energy from other people and wilt like a sad decaying flower whenever they’re alone. But it’s important to enjoy your own company. Remember that you don’t have to be with other people to do things like go to see a movie, go out for coffee, go to an art gallery or even on vacation. You shouldn’t miss out on things just because you can’t find a friend who wants to go with you. The more time you spend by yourself, the more comfortable you’ll be in your own presence. Remember that all you have to do is take a book with you – once you open it, you have instant company and you become someone who’s artistic and aloof rather than at Starbucks by themselves.

Find What You Love

In order to be truly satisfied, you have to do things that you love for yourself. Being a parent and a partner is incredible, but you need to make sure that you have a life outside your family. You need to stop thinking about all the incredible things you’ll do when your kids are older and when you have more time – the truth is that you’ll never have more time, which means that you need to do what you love now. Start a book club, or finally write that novel, or go to art classes, or take an evening out from your family every week to start learning French. Doing something that you love that’s truly for yourself will make you feel more satisfied than almost anything else. Reclaiming your own identity amid the hubbub of everyday work and family life is one of the most joyful and calming things you could possibly do.
